Bachmann 90 Degree Crossing-Steel Track

Hello there,
I’m a huge French fan of Bachmann large scale trains but I still have a newbie question:
Can I run a Spectrum loco on a Bachmann 90 Degree Crossing-Steel Track ? No derailment in sight ?

I’m planning to build a “Figure 8” layout. I use Bachmann steel track because I have a full box of track sections.
Many thanks in advance for all your answers.

Chris,

Welcome to Large Scale Trains.

Yes, you can run a Spectrum loco on the Bachmann steel track. Just pay attention to the codicil that it is INDOOR track. If you try to use it outdoors, the steel will rust away quite fast, as it is not designed to be used outside.

Again, Welcome.

Howdy if you’re planning to use the steel track, which is limited to the smaller 4 foot diameter curves, which “Spectrum” locomotive are you planning to use on it?

The bigger Spectrum locos are going to be inoperable on that track. Most need 8 foot diameter. To my knowledge the only two Spectrum locos that are 4 foot diameter capable are the 2-4-2T Lyn and the tiny 2-6-0 Industrial mogul.

Many thanks for your replies. Very helpful.
It will be an indoor layout. I started this thread before buying any Spectrum locos and make a full box of stupid mistakes.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Vic,

This Spectrum loco will do perfectly on 4 foot diameter track, and the price is right! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Forgot that one (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

The climax and two truck shays do small curves!

I have the Heisler, Climax and 2-Truck Shay and before converting them to battery I tested each of them on a loop of the Bachmann steel track when first purchased. While there weren’t any derailments and I only tested/broke-them-in for about 20 minutes all was fine at slow speeds. However, from an aesthetic point of view there was a bunch of rather unattractive overhang. Also, I did not couple any cars to the engines so don’t know how well that would have worked.

I ran my 2 truck Shay on that kind of track before I had my layout. It would tend to pull the trailing car off the track to the outside of the curve. The locomotive ran fine though.

Thanks Steve for your friendly welcome (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I’m planning to buy this loco (in Europe of course !)
