Bachmann 4-4-0 American

Thanks to Cale, I am now the proud owner of a 1/20.3 Bachmann 4-4-0. Anybody know what Bachmann used for a prototype? The official Bachmann line is “based on a standard Baldwin catalog design of this period.” (1876?) Any known faults or problems? I already have several great suggestions from Ken about dressing her up. I’m betting she’ll be in the shop all Winter. This loco deserves a sound card. And some professional decals. The plan is to start my third short line…the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.

Here it is with the Annie.

I was really pretty amazed at how much larger the smaller scale 10 wheeler is.

Then again, if you really felt ambitious, you could gussy it up tp look like this:

Early locos were very small. What you want to compare are things like door openings and floor to ceiling height inside the cab. The 4-6-0 is 1:22.5 which isn’t that far off from 1:20.3 at a quick glance. The bigger locos, like the Connie, really show off the size difference.

I always thought that my Bachmann cabooses and 1:24 Aristo Classic stuff looked close enough with my Connie, until I piked up some 1:20.3 cars and a caboose. BIG difference.

The thought occurred to me, but you would insist I spray it with dullcoat  Ralph

That looks like the same engine I bought Ralph.

I had the circuit board blow out after about 5 hours of run time. I removed it and replaced the LED’s with incandescent lamps, and some parts were missing and broken. The box showed it was at a few train shows before I bought it “new”.

Nice unit.

Yes Red is NICE, but she is SO beautiful in black…very slimming! Black with white letters and numbers some inspiration:

Not to worry Cale.
The American will be black.
I’ll dress it up with some brass.
Thanks again. Haven’t powered her up yet.
Too many leaves.
Ralph

Swept leaves and ran the Columbia this afternoon with the kids!..she’s black now!

David,
I take it you just wired it direct and did without the board.
Did you ever get sound? I’m thinking QSI.

Cale,
The little LGB looks good. I see it’s now battery powered.
