Bachmann 3-truck Shay

From the deafening silence attending my last post requesting details of fitting a sound system into the new Bachmann three-truck Shay, I assume that nobody here has done it, apart from TOC, who ain’t sayin’…

Well, I know Tom LaPointe has, but he runs DCC, and over here we don’t.

Have I hit on a taboo subject here?

TAC,
I’ve fitted batts, AW, and a P5 in one.

RCS, Serria Sound, SSI, and 4500 mh NIMh batteries! No bigee! The batteries and speaker in the rear tender body with charge jack and main power switch in the water hatch. All the rest in the oil bunker, use shoe horn for installation. Sound volume switch is in the front of the oil bunker. The antenna runs to the handrail, you will see me lay the transmitter next to the handrail to get signel to the receiver. When the rails are wet (i.e. it rains) get good range! Follow Tony’s plans, suggest you lay it all out on the bench and get an idea where everything goes.

SSI?

Piccies please.

BTW - Sierra now gone down the choobs.

An RCS board which is used to power the Serria Sound board and control the power up and advance of the throttle. The sound board then uses battary power and not the ‘little’ battary that you can get with it.

Does that help?

I think so. But with the demise of Sierra I guess the question is no longer moot.

Anyhow, it’s like this, Sir. I have a bunch of Aristo-Craft Dash 9s, SD45s and FA’s [fifteen], into which I am putting the new QSI sound system that operates via track power. I also have the neat little hand-held controller that allows you to control all the sounds that you would get if you were running it with DCC. Some folks laff at this little board and it’s cute sounds, but I like it and the things it allows me to do without the cost and pain of either DCC or radio systems, although I DO run my steamies with radio.

I was rather hoping that there was a similar QSI sound card that would fit the three-truck Shay and allow me to use this hand-held sound controller, and not have to buy yet another system. Needless to say, I also have all the other Bachmann geared loco, as well as the Connie. My one-off Accucraft K-27 came with Sierra sound anyhow.

With around forty sparkie locos, I’m not yet ready to go to battery power, nor do I have the cash to do it. I’m not into multiple train running - my layout is small and only double-tracked, and optimised for Gauge 1 live-steam passenger train whizz-around-type running, so when i run electrics it’s usually only one or two at a time, single or double-headed.

I do appreciate all the help and advice I get here, truly, and I’m trying very hard not to sound like a jerk or to be a PITA.

TAC, I am not familiar QSI SOund so I can not heop with that system, however as you say with the bowing out of sierra it is moot. Now I have several Sierra sound boards, and if they go I a, not sure what will be done, maybe quite trains!
