Bachmann 3 Truck Shay

Hello everyone.

I am keen to purchase a DCC/Sound Bachmann 3 Truck Shay at the new reduced price advertised by a large mail order retailer.

My layout set-up necessitates handling the loco on and off each run session.
Not being very technically minded I am concerned at some of the early reviews of this loco.

Has Bachmann corrected the reported wiring harness problem with new production?
If yes, how would you identify a newer production model.

All thoughts on the Bachmann 3 Truck Shay welcome.

Les.

Les,
quite possible only one production run with the 3-truck. If so then I hardly expect any production changes mid production - if changes did occur then one is sure Bachmann will not say anything to that effect to advise the consumer.

When first released Dave Goodson did a step by step on correcting the problem with the wiring on the MLS forum.

Les: The only problem I had was that I installed the controls in the Oil Bunker and ran the power thru the wiring between the Loco and the tank and did a nice melt job on the two three strand wires that were used for the power run - won’t handel the 2 or 3 amps that are required! Other that that there was no problem other the Dave G fixs which are not hard to do. I am injoying my 3T Shay, use mor than the 2 T units I have. My other geared Loco sit with their batteys going dead! Can only run one at a time - old age you know!

One question, Les:

You run dcc?

No not at the moment.

I did venture into LGB MTS1 but did not stay long.

Would like to get back into DCC some day.

Les.

Remember, there is no mechanical chuff input, nor provision for one in that quasinami.
You cannot set the volume without a programmer and programming track.
You cannot trigger any sounds with magnets and reed switches.

IF this unit is far cheaper than a non-dcc-equipped unit, do it.
If not, buy one without and convert it to something that works later.

There are apparently no replacement boards available (last I heard), so if it croaks, you get to pitch it and start over anyway.

I have a 3-truck that came so equipped.
The quasinami is landfill (it was DOA).
It runs just fine on track power.
