Bachmann 3 Truck Shay Stuff

The managment of the WV&K NG is happy to announce that a new to us three truck Shay has been aquired from an eqipment dealer in Illinois. Anyone got any tips and or suggestions on this new model?Theres not a lot I don;t know about the old two truck model just wondering if anything new has been thrown in fer giggles. What sound systems are folks using now that Sierra aren’t availible any longer?

Phoenix.

I’ve been out of it for a while… Sierra is gone?

Jon.

Soundtraxx is still around, making decoders and sound systems for smaller gauges. They just quit making the Sierra for large scale.

Pity, that.

A pity it was indeed, but it was not easy for a dealer to keep stock of all the sound options.
Each sound had a dedicated IC meaning lots of different hardware, rather than one piece of hardware which can be programmed for every different sound system in the Phoenix files.

I agree.

I guess this is a good place and time to ask this question. I know Sierra/Sound Trax has been concentrating on the DCC and smaller market. The parts are smaller, yes? But what is the reason they can’t be used in the larger large scale equipment? Voltage?

…and power outputs.
The only LS version of the Tsunami ever made was fitted to the Three Truck Shay and cannot be operated to its full capabilities with anything other than DCC.

So there is no way to control it with resistors, capictors and other stuff I know nothing about?

…or you can exercise another form of “control” with a pair of sidecutters to pitch it and put something in that does work.

hehehehe that was a great tip!

Tony,

Great advice, but after the sidecutters what is the replacement you’d recommend?

Which sound is best for you depends on what you want.
For DC track power the most realistic is the Phoenix PB9. Dallee is OK but nowhere near as good.
QSI has great sound but is not easy to activate Whistle/Horn and Bell.
Later next week I will be testing a QSI fitted to a GP-40 to see if I can get it to work with the RCS stuff. I already know it will work with BELTROL.

For battery R/C the P5 + P5t is better value than the P9 but still expensive than the Dallee.

If you can wait a litle while longer the new P8 will be coming out soon??? This is a more capable P5. The P8 will have five sound triggers plus it can read motor voltage for diesel speed reference. It should be less expensive than the P5 + P5T combo and will be simpler to wire in.

AIRWIRE P5 battery and your done. You can do all sorts of stuff. Get the Phoenix interface and
you can program the thing you like. I have the usual bell on F1, the horn on F2 tunnel fade
on F3, crossing horn F4 coasting on F5 all lights but the headlights on F6, headlight F0, sound vol F7 and F8
water fill on F9, coal in to firebox F10. I don’t remember what else I’ve done at the moment.

OH another thing about Airwire is you can use any sound decoder for DCC with a AMP to speaker
and it works in LS.

Rodney

Well Bart,

I guess Tony favors - “For battery R/C the P5 + P5t is better value than the P9 but still expensive than the Dallee.”

And Rodney likes - “AIRWIRE P5 battery and your done.”

I’m not sure what I would do. I’d probably contact Dave Goodson and ask his opinion.

I still have several of the Sierra sound systems in my engines. I liked them. If I had to pick another one this minute I guess it would be the Phoenix sound systems. They are located a few miles from us too. But I’m so broke right now I’m thinking about selling stuff instead of buying…

Jon.

I’m going with BELTROL , everything I’ve got is already from the RCS fold and I like keeping it all compartmentalized, Thought I had settled on a Phoenix P9 but seems theres a problem with the order, will check and advise…
