Bachmann 3 truck Shay questions

Ah, you’ve got THAT one!
No, the bunker is not supposed to be loose.
Look in your parts, the coal pile has a little bag of screws in with it.
You are supposed to take the shell off (and hot-glue, and tie-down the wires) and put the screws in.
No, the end beams don’t come off separately, however, the link pocket and steps do.
Apparently the Westside were painted red, but knowing red paint and UV, they probably truned pink over time.
Remove the pin from the link pocket, then the pocket (one screw in one of the pockets), remove the steps, mask off and paint!
Do the steps, but to match your 2-truck WSLCo shay, don’t paint the pocket.
The 3-truck WSLCo is red, but it doesn’t match the 2-trucker.

aaaaaaaaaaaaah… pocket?

sending you an email… Hey Dave…unable to send you email for some reason. The message says that your server is regecting my email…

Just in case he’s been knocked off for whatever reason, the “pocket” in this case is the gadget mounted above your swinging (or otherwise) coupler, with several choices of slot for which you’d put the link bar in with the (supplied) pin, to couple to a car equipped with this type of coupler.

To remove it for painting the beam, you remove the large vertical pin (often requires a fair amount of force) so that you can get a screwdriver on the screw(s) behind it.

I’ve been out working in the shop, and I refuse to have one of these gatesboxes out there.

Found enough bits to get the drivelines in the hind-tXt Climax I’ve been messing with for over 5 years.

Yeah, the guys at Bachmann Service call those “bookshelves”, seriously.
Link Pocket for link-and-pin couplings.

Dave Having or not having a “GatesBox” or a “JobsBox” in your shop has nothing to do with your server rejecting someone’s legitimate email…

Is it best to run the new Shay without pulling any cars at first?

Well, break-in is always nice, but I never do.
I just put them in service and off they go.

What would be considered "good break-in"?

I break locomotives in by lubing them per the instructions/video then placing it on the track and letting it run in one direction for a while and then running it in reverse for a while. When that’s done play with the darn thing…!

The loco is well lubed! What is a good running (bi-directional) amount of time?

Depending on the locomotive…but try an hour each direction.

ok…depending on the locomotive… we are talking about the 3 truck Shay here.

1 hour.

Each way.

Or, put a train on it and run it one hour each way.

Whatever you do, re-lube it when done.
