I believe these box cars have body mounted knuckle couplers. I would like to mount hook and loop couplers in their place. Has anyone done this?
Hi Dan. If your curves are wide why not but if tight like 4’ diameter it might not. Try LGB or bachmann H+L since they have alot more swing then the Aristo ones do.
I had one of those 20’ boxcars and actually swapped out the trucks so I would have truck mounted H+L . I didn’t like the look of the car overall next to my other equipment so I sold it and replaced it with 20’ cars from Aristo… I just looked at one of them and it has body mounted aristo H+L and they work fine but this may be due to them being only 10" long. The bachmann 20’ers are longer but I can’t remember how much.
I’d say go for it and give it a shot. Anything can be done sometimes it is just a matter of time and money.

Why didn’t I think of that Todd. I have some Bachmann gondolas with Archbar trucks, that I haven’t used. I did one box car last night and it worked perfectly.
It does work but for me I thought it made the boxcar sit too high and looked sorta like a Lionel. But then again all sorts of RR’s ran all sorts of different sized equipment. There is a photo somewhere of a interchange house where freight was moved from one big boxcar to a much smaller one. So anything goes. If it looks unusual chances are there was a prototype for it somewhere sometime AND if it is OK for you then you are fine.

Here’s the photo Todd referred to…
That photo is the East Broad Top interchange at Mt Union, and the 20’ boxcars would have been smaller than the 30’ steel EBT boxcar on the left.
But, as noted, anything goes in narrow gauge.
P.S. There are drawings of the C&K 20’ boxcar in Carstens “Slim Gauge Cars”, and the author notes the drawings are ‘probably accurate to within 10%’. !!
Joe you read my mind that is it.
I say anything goes on a private freelance RR.
