Bachmann 1:20.3 rolling stock

If any of you have changed couplers on the Bachmann 1:20.3 twenty foot or shorty rolling stock, I am in need of the plastic springy thing that goes between the knuckle coupler and the housing that mounts on the body of the car. I am in need of one, could use more but really need one. If you have and don’t need let me know and we can work something out.

James

The centering spring? Looks like a circle of plastic with two plastic tails off at about 30 degree angles? I’ll try and get a picture of what I have.

Here’s a picture stolen off eBay.

I have quite a few of the couplers. Not sure how that part comes off, but it must.

Ron

The ones you pictured, I believe, come on the longer 1:20.3 Bachmann rolling stock and I have not figured out how to make them work on the project I am working on. I need the ones that come on the short rolling stock. It is the right idea but the ones I need have a kind of pocket the knuckle fits into.
Thank for the effort.

James

OK. I don’t have any of the short cars so I didn’t know they were different.

Anyone else ?

Hi
I think these are the same

Michael B - the ones you link to are not the same as the ones posted above. They appear to be a blending of the Spectrum couplers (above) and the standard knuckle couplers provided on the Big Hauler line. I had not seen those before and I kinda like the idea and have been looking for a way to do exactly what B’mann has provided.

Thanks for the link and information. BTW for near as I can tell, the Spectrum and Big Hauler knuckles are almost identical in physical size, although the Spectrum couplers function far better than the Big Hauler line. There are mods and fixes to improve the BH couplers, some easier than others.

Hi Bob
The couplers on the 20’ short cars are a different set up to the other big hauler cars as they are body mounted. I have both 20’ cars and the coupler linked to above, the only difference is that the spare couplers still have the “tail” on the back of the knuckle, it is missing on the ones on the 20’ cars.
Mick

I think Mick may be right. I wish there was a better picture so I could be sure before I order them. I don’t need more couplers I can not use.

James

I believe these are what your looking for. These are off a couple of 20’ flat cars that I converted to Kadees. Since I don’t have any of the 1:20 cars since these were bought long before the 1:20 stuff came out, they’re probably what you need.

And that looks almost identical to the one in the link except that on Ken’s the old-style centering tail (for truck mounting) has been cut off.

After digging through the Bachmann site, here is what I can find. These are the standard Big Hauler couplers found here: http://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66_69_75&sort=20a&page=1

and are the truck mounted variety. These are the latest body mounted version (I have not seen these until this thread got me looking); http://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=66_69_75&sort=20a&page=1

These are the Spectrum couplers and separate draft gear box found here: (Drop shank shown, straight shank also available) http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewCat&catId=202

I do have a couple of the shorty 1:20.3 cars, but they are out of reach at the minute and I have no means to reference them. @Jon - There is a small screw located on the bottom side of the coupler in the dovetail portion that will allow the cast coupler to be separated from the plastic draw bar portion. I have tinkered with that for custom mountings. No real progress there…yet. @Ken - If you could show the other side of the coupler in the top photo it would be most helpful. I believe the view you show is the bottom. If Kens is the coupler being referred to, I don’t know if it is available as a part, either catalog or service. Bob C.

Howzat?

If this is the part you need, your welcome to it. I should have a few more laying around somewhere. These draft boxes are almost identical to the Kadees.

They are interchangeable with Kadees. All the screw holes etc. line up.

Ken

The pictures you show is exactly what I am looking for. I don’t need the draft boxes or even the knuckle itself. The springy thing is the key to my puzzle. If you don’t need and want to turn lose of them let me know. Contact me and we will work something out.

Ken,

Thanks for the pic. That coupler looks too much like a hybrid of the newer Spectrum coupler and the older Big Hauler line. Without being able to see the shank on the new coupler and box (black body mount above), I would almost bet the farm that is the one James needs to order. At $4.00 each, I might be tempted to purchase a set just for the curiosity of it. In fact, I might just do that.
