Bachman Connie binding

I was running my Bachman Connie today and the nylon gear finally let loose. Of course it busted at the furthest part in the yard. Replaced the gear with a brass gear. A lot easyer than I thought it would be. Before I installed the gear cover I spun the drivers and noticed them binding. I dont see anything obvious. They bind in one spot only. Has anyone run in to this before? The drive rods and the valve gear rods are not connected.

Louis,

Also be sure you have re-installed the driver in correct quartering with the rest of the drivers. It IS POSSIBLE to not get it right. As me how I know. And a second question. Did you re-install the two small brass rings that came out with the nylon gear? They are required.

Bob C.

When reassembling, make sure the two front sand lines are not rubbing on the front wheels.

The sand lines should go into the the chassis holes in front of the cross member, not behind it.

The gear on the axle is not meshing with the motor so that rules out the motor part. I did reinstall the two brass bushings. I dont under stand how the drivers could be installed incorrectly, the axle and drivers are D cut. the sand lines are clear. I have did not installed the brake rigging. I"ll do that now and see if it makes a difference.

It is possible they were always binding, and you just never noticed? Not that it helps!

Identify exactly where the binding occurs. On coupled engines, it is usually when one side is at 12 and the other at 9 (o’clock). It happens when one rod or frame side is not exactly the same as the other.

Now that I think on it the engine did run jerky like at slow speeds. I looked some more and it looked like the #2 axle was binding. Turn it 180 deg. Much better. Hardly any binding at all . Thanks for all the ideas.
