Well I bought a 45 tonner! I was expecting it to be similar size to my Climax, but no way! This thing is huge! I’m not so happy with it. Great looking model for $60. It dwarfs all my rolling stock. Thinking of putting it in the classifieds. Any thoughts?
Ummm…
WELL covered on every forum I’ve been to, including this one and the Bachmann Forum.
I do believe the award-winning review in Garden Railways said the same thing.
At this late date, with all the stuff in print out there on this, you should have seen it.
Well , in answer to your "any thoughts " ,yes , Keep it . Use it . I have four of them plus one to keep as is . It is a nice model especially done up a bit with muck and bits . The real one is not small , is it ? 44 tonner should be the giveaway . Useful bit of kit . Don’t be put off by first impressions . Use it as intended and you will get used to it .
It only looks different because shunters need a good field of view .
Mike
When one considers that the Bachmann Shay is a 38 ton job, a 45 ton Diesel would be a good size, and as this model is built to accomodate gauges from 750mm up to broad gauge 5’ 6", it is big on the narrower gauges, but what good value, and a good hauler to boot!
Absolutely.
Figure also to get 45 tons out of it with no boiler, cylinders, ect…
Standard Gauge carbody.
You guys a brutal ! You need to keep in mind not everyone new to the hobby has a good feel for the relationship of standard gauge to narrow gauge in any scale, let alone the hodgepodge alphabet soup in “G” whatever !
Brutal?
Maybe I shuld add that to my signature line…
I don’t know, Gary.
I always figure before you buy something you ask or read up on it.
Maybe that’s old-school, eh?
Just trying to be charatable after all it was his first post here, maybe the first any where !
Gary,
Todd has been around LS for some years now. Posting in most forums.
Get 1:20 rolling stock! Or convert it to something smaller?
Thanks for the replies. I did read up on it, asked in another forum, I guess I was under estimating it’s size.

Unless you can make the engine into something else then you might have to invest in some 1:20 freight…
Putting in the classifieds might not be worth it unless you are willing to take a hit as Ridge Road Stn still has them at $60 and they have a better price on shipping then the individual seller has and that usually is 50% off regular rates.
Cheers,
It makes great clearance gauge. If it makes it past something, everything else will.

Yup - And if you run it fast enough, and the obstacles are weak enough, it will widen the ROW for you. I proved that one already. I have to take a picture of it going through the portal form indoors to outdoors. Less then 1/8" clearance on top and one side. The first time I ran it through I didn’t even think about going slow. Almost had an accident when I saw how close it was. The actual hole has lots of clearance, but I framed it in with a decorative portal so it wouldn’t look stupid with my 1:29 stuff. JR [EDIT] Found a picture already on the web. Not the outside portal, but an interior wall. I made this one to comply with a 1:20 track gauge and it’s still tight
[EDIT 2] And here is a 1:29 engine in the outside portal very early in the construction phase. The 45T just squeaks through here.
