B-man two truck shay motor blocks

I guess this is the place to ask this question.
I have a two truck shay that needs the motor blocks wired togather. they are not now so it runs jurky.
can anyone walk me thought this or is it best to ship it off to someone and have them do it.

thanks
Geoff

Is it track or bat powered?

If I read your reply to Barry correctly.
“You pick up the shay and one block stops.”

Actually, the shays ain’t “hardwired” to the control boards in the lokie.
The current is passed thru a copper round buss located under the lokies at the motor pivots.
When you pick it up, the weight of the motor block pulls it away, losing contact.
You are better off to get rid of all that contact crap and hard wire the motor’s together and thence up into the lokie.

Hi John
Yes its track power and the control board is gone already.
I just need to find out how to take it apart and wire the trucks togather so that the feed each other power.

Contact Dave Goodson, and find out how to do it…or send it to him and have it R/C’d and get it over with, you will be glad you did…!!!

Turn your shay upside down. Centered between the journal boxes/springs on each side of each truck are two screws (one on each side) that point towards the water tank and boiler. Remove these screws and the truck comes loose from two posts and the pivot point that house the contact rings. The wires are fed through there. I’m not sure of color combination as my shays were both different, but it is fairly self explanitory after you drop the truck off the frame. You should have four wires though, track power in and truck power out. Figure out your combination of wires and solder together.

There are two screws that are right below the ones you removed they point in towards the center of the truck. If I remember correctly, (I run battery power so I completely removed my track pick ups and wire) these hold the contact strips for track pickup, if you accidently remove them or need to remove them to get clearence, you might want to open the bottom plate of the truck to make sure you resecure them properly inside.

Hope this helps.

Right now I can't/don't wish to spend the money to have this loco converted to batt power. It might be going to Dave but I have a LGB loco that I need him to fix first and will have to send it to him sometime soon.

I have one loco from Dave and love it.

thanks, I sure this is going to help. I will have to work on it this weekend but I follow so far what you r talking about. I sure once I get the trucks off I can call Berry and he could help but you did a great job of pointing out what I needed to know.
Thanks again
Geoff

Geoff;
Sorry for preaching to the converted…!!!

Pardon my lack of data.
I have a three-truck shay running on track power.
I thought the trucks independently supply track power to the motor. If accurate, what is the advantage of wiring them together – presuming retaining each having independent connection to the motor.
My suspicion is I am in error on each providing power to the motor.
Please bring me up to speed.
Thanks,
Wendell

Each truck on my shay is a motored truck. By wiring them togather they both pick up power and feed each other. This will help them run smother. Right now if one block hits and bad point the other has to push or pull the other over that spot causing the jurky action.

I would guess that the three truck shat is the same with each block being a powered one.

I need to rewire my shay because the blocks were replaced and the curcit board was removed and they did not make a jumper for the power pick ups to feed each motor block.

Thanks.
Makes sense --esp. since the board was removed.
