Audacity at the GR site

I find that popup annoying. I like the site, although the forum is dead there is some useful info now and then on the “subscription only” side.

I’m letting my subscription to GR lapse. There’s more and better info on the forum. I might be willing to pay for GR online, but if I did I would not want to be bombarded with popups.

I had a subscription to LSOL for a while–talk about annoying! I don’t know if it was a mac issue or not, but the site asked me to login virtually every time I clicked. They kept asking me to resubscribe, but when I complained abut the constant login they said it was a mac problem, basically, TS pal, don’t bother us.

It was annoying for the same reason the GR popup is annoying. It’s a distraction whose sole purpose is to get you to spend money. it’s as irritating as those little paper 3x5 cards in magazines

The internet, for the most part, operates on the business model of free content supported by advertising.

The print media’s business model has always been to charge for content, along with advertising.
Rather than adapt to the new medium, the print media brought their business model to the internet.
GR and Kalmbach are not alone. Many newspaper and magazine sites are restricted to subscribers and include advertising.

I said I don’t care about the pop-up, since I don’t frequent the site.
However, I hope the print media fails with their business model on the internet.
If they succeed with their business model, we may soon be paying for content everywhere.

Greg, was there a third Pop-up thread on the GR site to which you're referring about being deleted? There was the one that was started by Rudy which was locked, but still shows up on the site. There's also the one that is a bit higher up in which Rudy reasserted his opposition to the pop-ups and posted Rene's response. That has four or five responses and is still an active thread. Those are the only two threads I've seen over there relative to pop-ups. I could very well have missed the deleted one to which you're referring.

Later,

K

The thread that was deleted had a comment from me, it’s gone. My comment was not abrasive, just that I did not like it, and felt as a subscriber, getting a popup to subscribe was not right. This was before the one started by Rudy, by about a week.

I was surprised to return and the thread was gone.

I really do not remember any more specifics, since I was (at the time) not concerned that the thread would disappear.

I think that Rene could have been more tactful in her response.

My “reading between the lines” and knowing how polite Rene is usually, makes me THINK (obviously I do not know) that the official feeling is “up yours”, it’s our site…

I’m cool with that. With the recent degradation in the quality of reviews, and the pretty obvious bias where the size of the review seems to be related to the number of pages of advertising by the manufacturer, my subscription will probably lapse.

To somewhat expand on this, I subscribed many years ago because of the many good articles and unbiased reviews. That was in the beginning.

Now, when I read a review, but in the text it says “since I do not understand this, I won’t review this part of this product”, wow, that’s bad.

Another reason to subscribe was all the neat ads, where I could quickly look at prices. Well, now it seems that the prices (when they ARE published) are wrong, so I have to look them up on the web.

I’m not much of a scratch builder, so no goodies for me there.

Nowadays, even the smaller suppliers have web sites.

So, I’ve been running out of reasons to keep renewing.

Yes, maybe the popup is a small irritation, just click off, but it’s a sign of the increasing saturation of advertising. I don’t like it. I guess I’m from the old school, don’t just complain, do something about it.

So, when renewal time comes up, I’ll probably not renew.

My reasons might not be right for everyone else, but the are valid for me.

Regards, Greg

The inserted cards you can just shake out of the mag, try shaking your monitor to flip the pop up.

PS Oh BTW those cards, one of the issues of “Shutterbug” had a deal I could not refuse, three year subscription for less than what I pay for one year at the newsstand. Then there was the one in the “Videomaker”, get the OnLine edition for next to nothing!

GR I look at it at the newsstand, if there’s anything that has to be read I may buy it. MR comes from the library, many times it arrives late afternoon and is ready to be returned three hours later. There is just so little new stuff and tons of repetition! :frowning: :frowning:
