Large Scale Central

Atlantic

I have a Lionel Atlantic that I’ve hot rodded with RCS and Small scale Railway sound. It runs like a champ now and I would like to repaint it. Can someone suggest a prototype with matching Aristo Heavyweights that I could match up? I take it none of the Western railroads had them or am I missinformed?

Gee, I have decals left, maybe I should bumble bee it? That aughta get someone going!

Marc,

While many RR’s had 4-4-2 Atlantics the Lionel model replicates a Pennsylvania RR engine. The squared off Belpaire firebox was only used by a relative few US railroads most notably the Pennsy and the Great Northern.

Do a search for Pennsylvania R.R. steam locomotives. It pulled the mostly Pullman green passenger cars of the era.

AsRichard said…Great Northerne, but overall the Atlantic wasn’t all that successful as a passenger loco, AS one N&W man said about some Ex Pennsy 4-4-2s…“Couldn’t start much but would run like hell”…

Truthfully anything ya wanted to come up with would work…after all its your own little world…Nitpickers may detrain at the first trestle…

Bart I like that."…Nitpickers may(must) detrain at the first trestle…" I must make a Sign. I forgot about the Belpaire firebox. Aristos Heavyweights are tuscan and I think they would look bad together. I guess I’ll go black

I’d opt for a rather generic Krylon semi-flat black (though the bumble-bee idea has a rather perverse sense of merit to it). I’ve found that generally speaking, the semi-flat black gives a good enough surface for decals. It’s not as good as gloss, but I also like the way the semi-flat covers as compared to the gloss black.

K

Besides the firebox, the cab on that locomotive is Pennsylvania style. Paint it black and use Krylon’s red oxide for the roof. Aristo makes some really great looking Penn heavyweights. If you hurry you will still catch the buy 4 and get 2 free deal that ends at the end of the year. I doubt if that locomotive could budge all 6 cars but if they are free… And you may decide you want that beautiful Kando Penn Pacific.

Warren

Warren, I’m currently installing RCS/phoenix in a Khando K4 for a friend. It is beautiful, but I got it in parts and with cut wires. Usually positives are colored on negs. black but not so for these guys. Some of the plugs even reverse ie; red on male plug goes into black on female plug ??? There is also a very thin trace on the engine board that the tender plugs into. This trace was burnt up on this one so if you have problems look there. I’m waiting on the puffing smoke unit to finish it. It should be spectacular.

Marc, Will the RCS operate with the Phoenix board manually? That is: Remote bell and whistle with the keypad. Are you using the new style board? Tony (RCS) hasn't made very many comments on this application yet. jb

John, the Board I’m using is a 2k2 H series, not the P5. So, yes it does work straight from the Basic 5 controler to the basic sw to the sound board.

HEhehehe Yeah I have that on the back of all my RR Passes........

Marc,

Make sure the sign is placed in the middle of the trestle, otherwise it is less effective. Just a small nit that needed picking.

Of course, it must be a high trestle – or a low one crossing a swamp full of alligators (or, out there in the Uttermost West, hungry grizzlies)
