Naval Academy Test Question
During their last class before graduation at the Naval Academy, the instructor gave the mid-shipmen a final question.
He stated to the group, “You are provided one metal pole, two bags of cement, a selection of shovels, a wheel barrow, and any other common tools you deem necessary. You have a detail consisting of one Chief Petty Officer, one Petty Officer Second Class, and six non-rated personnel. Describe the process you would take to erect the pole so that a flag hung from it can be seen from a distance of 100 meters. You have two hours for your response. Begin.”
The senior mid-shipmen began to write with concentration. At the end of two hours, the instructor called time and collected the papers. Quickly leafing through them, he announced the grades.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, there are some thorough and detailed responses here, but only one rates an ‘A’. I will read it to you:”
“In order to put up the flag pole, I would do the following: I’d say to the Chief Petty Officer, ‘Chief, have this flagpole erected.’”
This one middie has a proud future. His adventure is just beginning.
