Large Scale Central

As ugly as the back of a

Having an idle few minutes , like you do , I was looking through a copy of Train Shed Cyclopedia , No 67 and was reminded of the existence (?) of a boxcar with a steel end which went (goes?) under the name of
"Bull’s Eye Steel Reinforced End For Boxcars "
Were they ever put into general service ? The only picture that I have seen of one is the photo in the above mentioned book .
Ugly bugger .
When I first saw it , I thought it was a battlefield propaganda loudspeaker .

Mike

Dunno…got an image?

I hope this works , the original is a dot matrix type , and they have failed before when I tried . I wasn’t going to try if no interest was shown .

Well , I mucked it up , didn’t I ? No surprise there , then . I straightened it , cropped it , reduced it (it said) .Perhaps forgot to select “apply” Whatever , if it’s too big , I shall have to erase it . Let’s see what the Boss thinks . Bob , if it’s too much , I can try again . Mike EDIT . I tried to change it , I am now lost . All I can suggest is ,slide the bottom bar along to the right , leaving it about 2 inches from the r h end , then scroll up . The car in question is the top one . No criticisms , this is a LARGE scale site . When I try to get this thing sorted , the picture comes out like a fuzzy chequer board , almost as though there is an interference pattern .

Oh, I’ve seen that car. It’s the one that goes by my house at 1 am rattling my widows with its sub bass. Really that box car is interesting. I would like to find the reasoning behind its design.

Mike,
Send you to school, pay all that money, and all you want to do is look up the teacher’s dress!

John!!!
You even lifted it off its side , too !
I’m sitting here hanging my head in shame , honest .

Mike

Maybe Mike should just go back to looking up the teacher’s dress…

That is one strange looking boxcar end. I wonder how many cars of that type were made, or was it just a prototype.

Why did the thought go through my head that I prefer trains ?
Must rush off and find a teecha before it’s too late .

Hey , this is getting weird . I tried several times to send all the appropriate info from the book , i.e.three photos and two diagrams plus text .
At no time did my Freight Shed register receipt , however , the picture showing text and two cutaways was what I tried to send to put in place of the humungous picture I sent first .
So either John Bouck , or Bob Mc Cown have sorted it for me . If it is not they who did it , I shall be puzzled for evermore .

Back to what we were saying , Bart says have I got a picture , sees the one I posted , and Warren says it looks strange .
That’s why I sent the text page , just to show it isn’t even mentioned . The Bull’s Eye End , that is .

So , come on you experts or even dimbos , if ya know if they went into production , or have even seen one let loose , let us know .
Those concentric dimples sure look like they make it difficult to fit the grabirons and other ancillaries , it’s all different angles . Must be fairly strong , though , a pressed sheet like that would spread the stress of end loads quite evenly .
I bet the press tool went into a big lathe for shaping . ;<)

Mike

This is the page of text and photos I was referring to . Mike

'Tweren’t me! I shall now delete the photo from my post, Mike.

The photo looks to be heavily retouched, at the least. Perhaps this was simply an “illustration of concept” for something that never became reality?

Ray ,
I believe , looking at the photo in the book that I scanned and printed , that there is only the usual “sharpening” of things like the brake staff , which would have been lost in the background . The coupler looks as though it also has been highlighted .
I do not doubt that at least the one was made , but would really like to know how many and why .

Mike

That looks to me like the perfect choice for the battery/sound car following you locomotive! A prototype end that looks like a 4" speaker! The base and volume ought to be great!
