OK Joe, but I’ll take from your answer that even you were not daft enough to buy the Triplex
What is it about the Triplex that you don’t like?
I know it is a odd engine but it does look pretty interesting.
It is an interesting engine, but its sort of like when Bachmann announced the follow to the Heisler was going to be the Vulcan, which was an engine type almost no one had ever heard of and had a grand total of 4 prototypes, Peoples response was WTH?
The Triplex is similar, it had a grand total of 3 prototypes and was by all accounts a dismal failure, it was such a poor performer because no boiler could keep up steam pressure for the 3 sets of pistons that they eventually broke each one up and rebuilt them as three 2-8-0s.
So while it makes an interesting model unless your layout consists of nothing but Appalachian coal drags its not going to be very popular, especially with the western RRers. That’s why I scratch my head at why they chose such a daft prototype. I suspect it had more to do with ego than marketing. When USA cam out with the Big Boy, MTHs response was “two sets of drivers?, heres three sets of drivers nyeeh nyeh nyeeeh nyeh”
If they had done a proper Northern, which was by far the most popular locomotive type across the US, with dozens of roadnames, they could have pulled a hellova lot more people to the MTH side, but instead they issued a daft polarizing not very popular or for that matter, known about engine, and I’d bet the reason they haven’t done another engine since is that they are still paying for the production for the Triplex. Thats my basic thing, its such a missed opportunity.
PS we still have no Northern, THE most common and popular engine in the real world of steam., in large scale, and I doubt we ever will short of Live Steam.
