Hi, anyone run an Aristo FA-1 with Bachmann cars? Just wondering how they look together, can anyone tell me how tall and wide the FA-1 is? Thanks
Bachmann passenger cars are distictly narrow gauge cars of a much older style that would be pulled by a distictly standard gauge Diesel locomotive that is much of newer vintage.
You are sort of stuck with the Aristo heavyweight passenger cars to go with the Aristo FA-1, but actually it isn’t really a passenger locomotive as it is modelled by Aristo without a steam generator, which would have several vents on the roof at the rear of the locomotive.
OK, so much for the facts…now, on with having fun.
If you are pleased with the looks of the B’mann passenger cars being pulled by the FA-1, then go for it and enjoy.
Someone else will cut in and note that the FA-1 is modelled in 1:29th scale, while the B’mann passenger cars are 1:22.5…but they do not show the difference if it pleases you.
If it was my pike and I wanted a passenger train, and didn’t want to spend big bucks; I’d go for either a set put out by B’mann, with a “Big Hauler” 4-6-0, and a pair of passenger cars, or pick and choose several of their passenger cars, and pull it with one of the “Anniversary” editions of the 4-6-0.
If you are buying any of the "Big Hauler" sets, be sure that it is current production, as earlier 10 wheelers had a bad drive in them. Anything produced in the last several years has a good drive, and all the "Anniversary" locos, have the good drive in them.
Beware of what is sometimes pawned off on Evilbay…some of the B’mann 4-6-0’s on Evilbay are just pure crap if they are of earlier production.
Check the adds in Garden Railway magazine, for fairly good prices on current B’mann stuff…
I hope this helps.

I don’t yet have an FA loco; it is on my wish list lol.
But I do run Aristo 1:29 RS3 locos which are not too large. There is a slight width difference between Bachmann 1:22.5 and 1:29 stock but I have found that some of the 1:22.5 stock (3 bay hoppers. tank cars and flats do seem ‘at home’ with 1:29 stock.
I run the J&S 1:22.5 cars with an Annie as Fr. Fred suggests.
However, at the end of the day perception, cash flow, expediency and railroading fun are what calls the tune.
Thanks all, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words! I thought the cars might look bigger than the engine but see it’s the other way around. Mixing different scales sometimes looks good and sometimes not, ya never know if it will work till you see it
I have a book on the Wellsvilel Addison & Galeton that show them pulling the wooden sided box cars they kept ins ervice as long as they could with a ex SP F7 repainted in the Red and cream of the WAG. They were known as the Sole leather line back then and the wooden cars were used to transport hides and in places were more modern cars would / could not go. Seems there were some access issues at a port on Lake Ontario that these cars filled?
Bottom line is that the F7’s were taller than the wooden boxcars. Not sure on the width issues though?

File that in the ‘There’s a prototype for everything’ department.
Run 'em if ya got 'em
I pull 3 Aristo Sierra cars behind a Bachmann 4-6-0. I do usually have a Bachmann reefer between the loco & the combine. You can see them on the POOL RR photo center page at www.nctxas.org.
