AOL? WT...................?

Anybody here experiencing problems with AOL?

Here is what started happening to me on early tuesday morning …

  1. NO auto-start for AOL

  2. Having to self-start it - v slow to open and then…

  3. Trying to access emails - THIS appeared -

An error has occurred whilst trying to open your new email.
Please try again later.

  1. Can’t read old ones either.

  2. Although I CAN access my favourites - hence I’m here - I can’t access any other site on the internet.

  3. Having written on this site, I cannot erase of delete any part of this text - that’s why I’m taking my time to write this…

  4. I can’t back-page to the previous page.

  5. I can’t shut down AOL without using the control/Alt/delete method.

  6. …finally- trying to call the 24/7 help-line got this message -

‘Sorry, the service is closed…click…’

Anybody else got/had any of these problems?

Paging Mr Smith of Port Orford -

Sir, alas that you might think I’m ignoring you - nothing could be further from the truth.

As you see, I am completely unable to use e-mail, and would therefore be v grateful if you could pass that message on to Joen in yoojeen as well, if you would be so kind.

Best wishes

I use AOL UK: no issues, problems whatever.

AOL UK has no connection with AOL in the USA, they sold off the UK part a couple of years ago. AOL UK is part of Talk Talk Co.uk.

Tac, I use Opera as a browser, ( plus IE 8 which you need to have for Microsoft purposes also I find the Roanoke web cam works well with IE8). I got rid of Firefox due to the numerous add-ons required, one or two of which became troublesome. I can check and read my AOL mail with the Opera 11 browser but do need to visit the AOL Home Page once every two weeks to confirm deletion of the mail. I also use Yahoo mail and Google mail.

When I first read your post I did go to AOL UK and check mail (all five screen names). All worked satisfactorily; I also read some of the news pages to be sure that there were no issues other issues.

I know AOL is not everyones favorite but having been a customer of theirs for seven or so years I get a very favorable low cost for up to 8Mb (usually get around 6Mb) and free phone calls in the UK at any time. As I am not into games, video or music downloads that is quite sufficient for my needs.

Alan - I’m not sure if we are talking about the same AOL.

In fact, I don’t recognise ANYTHING that you’ve mentioned as part of MY version of AOL.

The fastest broad-band I have has been 1.2Mb - it is often substantially less than 1Mb. Where do YOU live that you have 6-8Mb? :open_mouth:

I have IE8 but MY AOL told me that it was unaccessible as an entity as it had been incorporated into AOL.

I don’t know what you mean when you say that you have checked all five screen names - do you mean mine of yours?

I have been an AOL customer for thirteen years.

AHAH!! NOW I can back-page!!!

Tac can you get on the net with IE? If so do you have any trouble with things in IE? I’m thinking you might have someting on your computer and not AOL. My boss uses AOL and it has been working fine for them. When was the last time your computer did updates? I have run in to trouble when the boss runs updates from time to time and I have to go back and undo them to get there AOL to work right.
Hope this helps.

Tac,

I only use AOL for some mail and as my ISP for access to the internet. I do not use have AOL 9, I uninstalled AOL 8 some years ago and was never able to upgrade to version 9. I use the AOL browser to delete mail (as I explained before) and just for checking my AOL account each month.

By checked screen names I mean mine.

I get the impression that whoever spoke to you was ill informed. IE8 is Microsoft item as you know and is not incorporated into AOL: rather the reverse. AOL software relies on Internet Explorer whichever version to work.

Geoff - everything else on my computer works just fine. As I noted, here in yUK it seems that IE is not astand-alone progeamme- but according to AOL, is incorporated into their system - I bow to those with greater knowledge than me, but I could not ever get into IE without it also cunjoring up AOL. Now I can’t even do that automatically I used to until last tuesday.

I am getting seriously peeved. AOL on-line ‘service’ has an automated voice that informs me that the service is closed.

Can’t do any more.

tac

AOL=America Off Line. :frowning:

I stopped using that service in 1995.

Tac,

I’m surprised that you’re having such a problem as Ig’s messages have gotten through (he uses carrier pigeon.plop).

I’ll send Joe the word sir. Hope you’re back online quickly.

Email sent to Joe…!

blame the wedding.

tac do you have a friend with a computer you could use to test if its AOL?
Not being from the UK I dont know how they have it set there. It might be that AOL and IE have to work togather.
YOu said you can get online but its slow and you cant delete once you have writen something in the forum. sounds like a AOL update has gone bad.
What kind of computer do you have and how old is it?
Do you know if any updates have been installed just before it started to act up?

Thanks to a few suggestions from Alan Lott down in Devon, and a couple of gentle hints from a few others, I am now fully back on line with AOL Desktop 9.6 and IEv8.

So far there have been no glitches, but I won’t be renewing the contract wit hAOL next time it comes up - I’ve missed a few things.

Best to all here

tac & ig

glad your back.

Me too. You can feel pretty lonely right fast without the window on the world that the internet gives you.

tac & ig, back amongst friends

Glad it is sorted Tac. I hear moans about most ISP in the UK so I have to be content with just three over the years from AOL.
