Anybody in Las Vegas?

We are going to Las Vegas for my youngest son’s 15th birthday, tomorrow through Wednesday (YAA!!!) , five days, and I know somebody cool on the forum lives there whom I’d like to visit, but I can’t remember who it is. Can anybody help out? The hotel said they have the internet in the hotel, so I can check in here.

Also, anybody know if there’s some railroad stuff to do there that’s in the town or nearby? I haven’t been to Las Vegas since 1978, but I see from all the pictures it’s changed.

I’m not renting a car, just doing the lift and uber thing and I see there’s a free shuttle around town.

You might be interested in this: easy riding distance from downtown Vegas. About 21 miles southeast of downtown. There’s always the “ole standby”…Boulder Dam, about 25 miles southeast of downtown.

There used to be a “Lunch Cruise” around Lake Mead, but I don’t know if they still do that or not.

There are plenty of Garden Railroads in the Vegas area, at least there were when the held the GR convention in 2004(?).

But you definitely have to check out the dam…:wink:

I wouldn’t even try to visit the Pawn Stars shop. You’ll be in line for hours.

Wow…the Southern, Nevada State RR Museum, maybe Lake Mead, and the Hoover Dam. Okay. I had no freaking idea the dam was anywhere near Las Vegas, I always thought it was somewhere way down there in Arizona. Cool!

I think we might have some fun! At least I will! I’ll have to make some serious trade-offs with my two teen-agers. On vacations, we have a deal: they get an activity, I get an activity. I’m taking two of my children so that makes it two to one in favor of them!

Still hope somebody in or near Las Vegas from our group sees this before we come home though.

I checked and they do have something like that, but I don’t like the looks of that ship. The only other one I’ve ever been on in my lifetime was the one that goes to the Statue of Liberty in New York there and I wasn’t too happy about that. Maybe lunch on the shore.

I just told a friend about the Hoover Dam being near Las Vegas and he said they have helicopter rides. Yeah, that ain’t happening either.

I’m a terra firma kind of guy.

We were just in Las Vegas back in September, bring lots of money as it is expensive (and we don’t gamble).

The Boulder dam is worth the trip, about an hour from Vegas.(didn’t know half is in Nevada and half in Arizona)

The Northern Nevada railway is way out (240mi) but we had a great time there, did the Be The Engineer excursion on the Steam & diesel locomotive (best wife ever).

It was a great experience, not in any real hurry to go back to Las Vegas anytime soon but I am glad I had the chance to see it.

That’s not completely true. My friend went there last year with his wife. Got there around noon, and they walked right in. History channel wasn’t filming that day. Gold and Silver Pawn.

Vince, we got here last night and I am in sensory shock, like literally shock, even after a good night’s sleep. My kids had a blast.

I’ve already come to the conclusion that this is a great place to visit…Once.

Can’t wait to get to the RR museum and dam; I’m assuming they aren’t jammed with people, blazing with colored flashing lights, and throbbing with sound!

Haha, if you are down in old Las Vegas (Fremont Street area, heart attack grill) it is very loud with all the bands playing out on the street and the annoying music blaring through speakers all over the sidewalks!

we stayed at the Venetian which was insanely expensive but very nice.

for a good laugh take a walk around at 5am and watch all the people that made poor life decisions the night before!

There’s a lot of “off the wall” stuff to see in Vegas, like a Mob (Mafia) museum, A Ferrari dealership in a casino, An aquarium where you are in the tank and the sharks are all around you. etc, etc, etc.

You can’t get it in in just a few days. The lobby of your hotel prolly has a rack full of pamphlets. My wife and I never ate in the big hotels. I have to laugh…you’re comment was priceless :)! Even for those of us here in So. Cal. who visit Vegas frequently, think the place IS a “little over the top”. Everything is brighter, bigger and more extravagant than anywhere else in the world :). Have you let the kid’s loose in the “kid’s casino” at Excalibur yet? When we took our son for the first time, we stayed at Excalibur (he was maybe 10 at the time), we were up ALL NIGHT with him doing that casino! Mom and Dad were pooped by 6am.! AND he was ready to go again.
