Another predator!

I walked outside yesterday and startled a great Blue Heron that was standing next to my pond.

This ain’t a big pond, only about 6 x 6 feet.
Everything else around here, except the Spokane River is ice covered. Where this guy came from, I’ll never know.
Anyway, I keep the pond ice free for the fish.
I doubt there’s any left.
First the coons, now the Heron.
I give up.
I’m gonna fill it in this spring and just put in a fountain.

I live very near a large inland lake. We have all kinds of Blue Herons. I wouldn’t even attempt a fish pond outdoors. Other do it, but I don’t know what the survival rate is.

Too bad they don’t eat squirrel.

I had my fish pond camouflaged under a bunch of trees, and had a statue of a blue heron wading in the pond. Herons do not like to share, so when one bird “owns” a pond, they tend to find other feeding grounds.

A fake heron works for us also. Try it first before you give up.

Also as a recommendation, do not take all the ice out of the pond, just make sure it is not solid ice on top, just need to have an opening for air circulation about the size of a basketball. If a heron comes the fish are safe under the ice and the pond will stay healthy.

So that means the birds that sit on my plastic garden owls head are really terrified?
John…buy cheap feeder goldfish and then attract a hawk or eagle into the yard. Our resident redtail does wonders with the chipmunks.
