I found the site talking to another member and thought I’d join the gang. I’m retired, a member of the DelOro Pacific modular group and San Diego GRS. My interest is in 1:20.3 and I have about 500 feet of track in the garden. Here a picture of my current project, it still needs to be weathered. The tank is from an AMS car but everything else is scratch build.
Very nice work! Welcome aboard.
Wa hey Davey, welcome aboard
hehehe You didn’t know I was here, did you
Welcome to the hoard!
Howdie Dave!
Welcome from another realative newbie here
Hello Dave,
Welcome! That sure is a fine looking model you posted too BTW.
Nice model , Dave . Looks like you’d better stay and show us some more !!!
Mike M
MIke, I had the pleasure to meet Dave and his charming wife Tressie when the dropped in on us a little while back.
He showed us some great pictures of his railroad and there’s no dout he’s a great modeller. As always it’s always a pleasure to meet a gentleman, not many of us left
Cheers
Yes , there is , Rod . There’s you , me , Richard Smith and …and … oh , yes , see what you mean . Ah .
Mike
Dave , I wonder if you could help with a small detail . I have a nearly completed Wheel and Rail Car from a
Bob Hartland kit . Lovely bit of work , those kits of his .
Anyway , the query-----the spare wheel /axle assemblies stowed on the deck trunnions , do they have an axle sticking out beyond the wheel , tapered to take the bearing , or parallel with a shouldered end . I might just as well do it properly .
Mike M
Parallel.
Straight shaft.
Prototypically, often (but not always) a collar on the end.
Never, and I mean ever, a pointy thingy on the end UNLESS the wheelsets have been recovered from a journal meltoff and ensuing massive crash…
Journal meltoff ? Crikey , that is something . I didn’t realise they got that hot . No wonder the wagons catch fire sometimes . Did they just finish up like a piece of stretched toffee? Frightening . I have seen hot boxes in the UK where the cotton waste has caught fire in the axle box , but that would be nowhere as severe as you describe . Mind you , I don’t suppose the UK rail stuff runs as fast as the USA ones
So, let’s get this in perspective , the axle melts and the whole thing parts company leaving the bogie side frames touching the ballast ? Jeez , must be something to see .
Well , that’s a bit more learning for me , thanks .
I shall do undamaged shouldered axles , then . Good site this , huh? Thanks Dave
