Large Scale Central

Another inexpensive bash for the BSRR, a Heisler

This is what I did to a gear stripped Bachmann 2-4-2 Columbia I got at last BTS for $20. Just add a pair of Aristo bricks, my leftover bunker from the CPH and an HLW flatcar. This one went faster and easiest of all by bashes so far!

Lots more detailing to do but the major components are all done. I havent been painting due to the proximity of the sleeping area and my wifes dislike of paint fumes, but we finally got the bedroom back into the bedroom, so now I can start to rock and roll in the workshop again…'bout time. I got 3 engines and a mess of cars needing paint![:D]

Now thats a neat little bash! Good job!

Got the end beams detailed last night, L&P couplers added, still need to fill in several gaps, but it is looking nice, like a small Gilpin Shay. I should replace the sidebars next.

PS Does anyone here have an idea what red paint might be a match to the Bachmann plastic or the HLW red plastic? I want to consider what this engine might look like if I make Red the color scheme, if I cannot find a good match, it gets painted black.

Vic,

Totally awsome! Which AC trucks/side frames did you use, the center cab or those from the rail bus?

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron, Those are the Centercab bricks. I use them since they are relatively easy to obtain thru my LHS. I will ditch the AC dismal sideframes, I have a trick I use, the archbar sideframes of the trucks that came with the HLW flatcar are the same wheelbase as the AC brick. By adding a 3/16 styrene angle on top I can redrill and use the same screws and mounting holes as the AC sidframes. I was pleasantly surprised ( big yeehaw!) when this gave me sideframes that were the right wheelbase and height and looked spot on for this type of engine. I did a specific topic on GR forum as part of my Class A Climax on doing the conversion. Here is a link for it.

Yeah, that sure sounds like a guy that’s going to quit the hobby, sell all his stuff and just sit there and torment his wife.

Well… every now and then ya just gotta say the heck with it, then pick yourself up and sailor on.

Ric,

The fun part of it, is that if I can keep her from reading this, she usually goes and buys something new to keep me interested. As long as I am in the shop in the Garage or the basement shop or down on the layout I am not in her hair. I also have started suggesting that we don’t do enough togehter and she asked me when I was going to start the layout expansion that she had vetoed earlier, or if I was going to get the ride on for the Grand kids. Yep it works, all you have to do is be retired and start talking about togetherness.

After I busted a physical and had to retire from the reserves she wanted to know if she could pay for me to go to camp.

Be a major pain in the rear it pays!

Yeah I get down some days, but my commitment to this hobby is wavering with all those folks who work to detract from it. I think that was one of the reasons I gave up doing the shows, I’d work my butt off to do a good one and then have folks finding fault with every thing. Kind of like the fellow from out west who waited until there were two booths left and then compained because he was in the back of the hall. I was ploting against him of course.

Ron

Hey, no good deed goes unpunished.

I think you do have to work on your “grouchy” reputation. Last couple of years, I noticed you kept trying to be nice to people and then they’d jump on ya. You know, if you can start every conversation with “Well, what the @$#%^&* do you want?” It kind of weeds out those that just want to bitch and don’t really have a legitimate question or concern.

Just another useful tidbit the military taught me.

I can also hold a coffee mug with the best of them. Took years of training to get it right.

Ron maybe for a while you just focus on only what you enjoy doing, none of the other stuff thats causing you grief, no shows, no open houses, no outside knuckleheads, just focus on your layout, your trains, and your interests and to %$#$@ with everything and everyone else. Sometimes you just have to focus on what you want and not what others expects. Theres nothing wrong with being totally selfish with your hobby from time to time.

PS I suggested that “togetherness” ruse…now I’m in Swing dance classes. D’oh!

PSPS I’m painting one other engine first, then this one should get base paint by this weekend.

Vic,

Swing Dancing, don’t ya love it when a plan come together!

And I have pretty much done what your suggesting. I even got out of of the club I helped to start. If the guys want to come by thats ok and if they don’t thats ok too. They know they are welcome but the days of open houses and free repairs are over. I even had a buy show up here at 9PM one evening wanting to know if I had anything to sell. No calls, just showed up. I had never seen him before. Darn creepy.

I hate to say this but my attitude has come up a few points since the SELSTS back in June, had a couple of vendors who were plucking that one last nerve I had and Sue could tell it. She remarked that I usually did not let things like the get to me. My response was yes and I was younger once. That was all that was said.

All in all there is a great group of folks in this hobby, that includes the Manufactures & most of their sales people are all good folks with a genuine interest in the hobby and most of whom I have come to know and respect as well as most of the mega dealers. Just one or two bad apples in one big barrel but they sure can make cider out of apples fast. They ruin it for most of those who work hard to make this the one true family hobby.

Ron

finally finished this one, get around to adding a little weathering one day, but she looks real purty right now[:)]
