Another Ebay oddity

Checking on Ebay I came across this unusual train related item. There is only just over a hour left and only 4 bidders. I thought I would alert you guys

http://www.ebay.com/itm/C-G-TRAIN-TRAIN-SQUASHED-PENNY-U-S-LINCOLN-WHEAT-PENNY-CURCULATED-COIN-/170765605776?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27c26c5b90

Lets see 15 cents being the high bid, a penny for his labor, another penny for his materials, free shipping? This item is going to cost the seller to sell it. I wonder how much the Ebay and paypal fees will total??

It is advertised as a wheat penny which it is NOT! Look at the backside.

Sold for $0.97. Ships easily by 1st class, so in the end he might have nearly doubled his investment. And if you read the not so fine print in the auction, shipping isn’t quite free…

I need a roll off pennies :)

and I’ve got just the place to do fifty at a time…Maybe a case to display the coin, hummmmmm.

Say, for some true realism, how about a couple of kids somewhere on your layout putting a penny on the track? Or does that send a bad message, safety-wise?

If you put them between the rails , it sends a bad message. If you make them move back from the rails as the train goes by then it's a slice of life.

its all done did you bid?? Actually when you think about it the guy made a huge mark up percentage wise by selling this flattened penny. With the nature of the description I think the guy was joking around.
Makes me want to dig out the penny that I have that was placed on the tracks and flattened by the very last run of the Big Boy… wink wink
Now where is my heavy hammer ?? LOL

Being a engineering student, I feel somewhat certain that a train produces more force than a hammer...

Damn I am going to run down the San Diegan line and burn up a roll of pennies with passing Amtrak trains…sell one a week to Rooster.

I know we are kidding here about running down to the local railroad track, but under TITLE 18 - CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE, PART I - CRIMES, CHAPTER 17 - COINS AND CURRENCY, it is illegal to deface U.S. currency. Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service. The penality shall be a fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both. After 1994 the court has the authority to impose a fine at its discretion. Of course the imprisonment terms mentioned in the statute speaks for itself. The guy who went on Ebay to sell the penny is pretty stupid in my opinion because in our current state of political affairs, the current administration is doing everything possible to control every aspect of our lives and if they will fine someone heavily for downloading 1 song, what more will they do to someone who defaces currency?

Well,
Nearly every tourist area I’ve ever been to has a vending machine that will flatten and imprint a penny.
As a child, I flattened hundreds of pennies, nickles and dimes on train tracks.
Let’s hope the Statue of Limitations has expired

Is that better, Steve
I saw that and was going to edit…but you had already locked in the “proof”

When I was a kid whenever we went to Knotts Berry Farm we would always put a penny or two on the tracks. Some years ago they stopped allowing it. Too bad it was always a cool souvenir.

Sorry, Ralph, but it was too good to pass up.

You have a free shot on my next misteak.

“Misteak”…ummm, possibly you might mean “Mistake”, or was it your night to fire up the BBQ, Steve…?
I just couldn’t wait for Ralph to jump on that one !!!

LOL I think the feds have better and more important things to do. Lets face it you deface a penny you will not go to prison. Drug dealers get less time. Trust me I know I deal with the court all the time. The people that got busted for downloading songs was for more then a few songs.
