Another Crane Bash

I read Mik’s article on ‘backdating a crane’ and found it interesting. We had a big UP crane sitting here for awhile and I took some pix of it. Happened to find the same crane in our local farm store’s toy section so I had to pick it up. Had a semi and trailer also, plan to use the trailer for the car the crane sits on. Note the Aristo figure in the toy crane’s seat.

You can see the pix I printed off in the background of the UP crane.

I decided to work with the toy’s basic proportions and and layout, so the cab gets moved to the other side.

You have to be willing to make compromises on your build, but I can do it!

Trial fit of the cab front and roof top. Aristo figure fits fine in the seat that the toy had.

Nice work. How do you cut out your windows?

kewl!

Nice build Jerry

Looks good. Maybe you can use it to move some of the snow that the rotary can’t deal with.

Will it operate?

Thanks guys.
Brian, I cut the windows with my Dremel too mostly, since it’s fairly thick plastic. I use a round saw blade tool, about 1/2" in diameter, pretty thin metal. Got it at a train show, wish I could find the extra blade I bought, this one is getting bent, I keep straightening it back up. Thinner stuff I just score with an x-acto #11 till I get through.

Go Jerry Go!!!

This is one to watch and see it develop.

I got the foil on, like I used on the rotary. Then primed it with Krylon. Note the metal foil goes over the window holes. I sprayed the primer inside also, it will be the interior color. Then glued in the plastic for the windows. Once I topcoat the primer with the UP color, I’ll cut the foil off the windows and have the plastic showing with no bother of taping off the windows.

Every time I see this thread, I read, “Another Plane Crash.”

Could be!

Anem

SWEET!

I got some paint on the crane. XO Rust brand, ‘Caution Yellow’, not bad for a UP color out of a can, but I’m easy to please. Still need to get the foil off the windows, but the paint is still tacky. It is sitting on the car I made for it. Based on the lowboy that it came with, had to widen it some and add edges. Blosters were added for the LGB trucks I had laying around. Just using some Aristo couplers that are truck mounted. Not planning to tow it around the layout, just have it sitting in the yard.

Doncha mean "doG?" Kimmee's dyslexic moment was writing $128 in her check register when the amount was actually $182... bouncing two small checks on the difference cost her ANOTHER $60 in fees. No discount for simple mistakes, either. They treat ya like you're a criminal check kiter

My 'lysdexic' moment was seeing the title of this thread as "Another Brain Crash".

Jerry, It’s looking real good. You must enjoy working with the foil. Ralph

Been sort of busy, did get the windows cleared off on the crane, working on the car a bit. Plan to make it a little longer. Need to brush the black on the boom where the yellow got on it.

Looking very nice, Jerry.

Any plans on adding stabilizing outriggers?
