Large Scale Central

Another cool little prototype loco

This vertical-boiler steam dummy sure is cute, and looks like it would be pretty easy to model:

Cool …only problem with modeling it would be the drive truck. No one makes trucks let alone drive blocks that small. The body could be bashed from a lil haulers but the drives would be tough to replicate.

How big is the Bachmann “handy dancer” power truck?

Its actually kinda big. I think the Peter Werr or PCC trolley trucks might be better but they don’t sell them seperatly AFAIK.

Vic , there is a British company who make small drives that are small enough to fit two per bogie ; nose hung motors take up little vertical space .

Anyone interested ? If so I’ll look up the address and post it here .

Mike I know who your talking about. Go ahead and post the link as I need to get in touch re: another project. Thanks

Mike, yes. NWSL used to sell a “magic carpet drive” similar to what you describe, but they no longer have the large scale version, the last time I checked. But NWSL did have wheels similar to the wheel on this thing. So with a little creativity one could cobble together something.

I think the trucks look like those 20’ bachmann freights? They are very short. Or, if they really are inside-framed, Sierra Valley has (had?) some small spoked wheels.

Mike, the drives are from Peter Spoerer. Here’s the traction motor drive: (the plate is to stop it rotating around the axle!)

Vic , David ,

There are two companies

1)MOTIONCO (just key that in)

2)http://www.abcgear.talktalk.net/html/traction_motors.html takes you straight to nose hung motor .

I understand that they will supply the traction motor with a long shaft for 45mm .

Like most websites , these both have a habit of hiding the stuff you want , and needless to say the price is going to shock some .

But if you want good stuff , it costs good money . £1 currently equates to $1.60 .

With the nose hung motor , you have to consider what body construction you can avoid , and you can also increase the number of projects available .

I have seen them in use in 0 gauge and they haul some hefty brass trains along .

Mike

PS Pete , your post went up while I was typing . I had forgotten Peter Spoerer .

North West Short Line’s PDF http://www.nwsl.com/uploads/chap2_web_09-01.pdf for motors and power blocks has some nice examples. Since the picture shows a NG proto (ooops it isn’t NG) a 0-scale Flea would be a good candidate - however presently unavailable since they redesign the product.

Interesting note in the catalogue “Need different specifications? Give us a call!”

The other candidate would be their 0-scale Magic Carpet nose-hung traction motor unit.

That thing is numbered 0. So its not an engine since its numbered below their engine numbers. So if they built a second one, would it have been 00 or maybe 1/2.

Just rambling.
