Angry Beaver Logging RR #4 "Old Betsy" a Kalamazoo bash this tim

This is what I started with, and old HLW/Kalamazoo engine literally built out of a leftover drive and old Kalamazoo parts lots from Ebay:

It was all black version, about 95% complete but I could never get used to the shortish odd cab version of this engine and was getting ready to jettison it to Ebay, then at the last BTS I got a good look at the MoLo Madera Suger Pine Co #1 “Old Betsy” 0-4-0, now I really REALLY like that engine (along with the Gypsy and the Falk) but they are all between $800 and $900 bucks which is almost the price of a new LGB engine!!! So as usual when I can’t afford what I want, I make do with my own version of it. Angry Beaver Logging RR #4 “Old Betsy”

Its basicly just an open cab version of the Kalamazoo but it changes the entire feel of the engine.

Still a few little details to finish, then paint and grime. Even got a couple LGB disconnects for this engine to drag around Thanks Aaron for the B’mann air compressor, hard to believe I actually ran out of some parts for this!

Nice Vic. I have a Stainze engine waiting to be kitbashed into a gypsy.

I like it

Fun, funky, quirky -cool!

VERY creative, looks neat!

That’s a great bash. I’m looking forward to seeing it painted.

Looks great Vic! Can’t wait to see it painted.

Vic, Great Bash, very creative! I also like your drawer joinery above your bench. I too have a kalamazoo, didn’t bash it I weathered it. it’s my yard switcher. Not a loco you often see.

I picked up a Kalamazoo train set a couple of weeks ago, at a garage sale. Needed a head light Ric sent me one. Had solid brass track in the set, surprised me. Seems to work fine, did not try the transformer that came with it though.

Jerry,

Most of Kalamazoo morphed into HLW, with the same bulletproof drives. These were engineered way back when they still built stuff to last a lifetime. Neat little engine with a terrible looking squashed cab (IMHO) I debated whether to just cut the top of the cab off, but decided to go completely topless, so to speak.

Came out pretty good, guess I still got a little talent.

Now that is cool Vic. I like the way the cab came out.

Yep!

Victor;

Love Old Betsy’s “air conditioning.” The lack of it is what really made the Porters I ran swealtering - stayed close to 120 degrees F in their cabs. (But it was a DRY heat.) #2 (Pauline) at least had the back of her cab open, but #65 (Petulia) had a big ol’ coal bunker filling up the back of her cab. I had to hang my head out of the cab to catch those nice, cool 86 degree F breezes. Ah, those were the glory days! I’m sure Old Betsy’s crews will love you - at least until winter comes. Then it’s time for plywood or heavy canvas.

Great work,
David Meashey

Victor,
“Old Betsy” turned out great! Nice work.

Very nice work. Now you need a couple of figures in there to really bring it to life. Why the red siderods?

Safety, I've notice on alot of old color photos of industrial loco's that the siderods were painted red, found out this was for higher visability in close quarters particularly in factory or mill conditions, but even some mining operations had this practice. I liked it so almost all my little steamies have them.
