Angels Flight reopening

The 116-year-old Angels Flight railway in Los Angeles will be reopening on Thursday.

A ride up the hill takes less than 50 seconds but it has been closed for a number of years. It is sure good to see it coming back.

If you are in Los Angeles, take the Metro to Pershing Square and take a $1 ride up Bunker Hill!

Thought that was opened a few years ago?

Pics of this event or it didn’t happen!

I’m “personally” to lazy to search it out or probably shouldn’t see it other wise as it might fill me with bad ideas.

The vid shows the new route… it’s been closed as much as run since the shift in 1996.

Reopening was announced in March 2017 …

Feelin’ spunkier than a rooster… this too shall pass.

This is what Angel’s Flight looked like when I took the ride at age six in 1949 at the original site from 1901. Hill Street at the Bottom and Olive at the top. Bunker Hill Tunnel next to the tracks. New Angel’s Flight location is now located about a 1/2 block away.

Photo below is how I remember it in 1949.

In its original location, it was used in a lot of old movies.

Yep, and another reopening per their web site the 31st of this month.

Did Gary and Joe make Angels Flight real Rooster? It “reopened” several years ago but closed after a couple weeks. I missed that one but with the amount of work they have done on it since I am glad I dd!

I wonder if Rooster will make a trip out west to ride it?

I doubt it. He’s CHICKEN!

Today its only about 1/2 as long as it was in 1949, they shaved that much off the top of Bunker Hill in the 1970’s that its really not much of a hill left anymore. $1? Each way? Geez, used to be only 50 cents.

It must be inflation!

I think the Upland Garden Railroad Society is going to put together a Metrolink trip from Upland and pay our bucks to take a ride.

Half the trip, for twice the price.

Only in Los Angeles! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Actually the new Angel’s Flight is only a few feet shorter than the original Angel’s Flight…298 feet at 33% (new) compared to 315 feet at 33% (the original). Vic is correct in that in the late sixties and early seventies, Bunker Hill was completely flattened down to the level of Hill Street as part of a urban renewal project. The tunnel and the “hill” are completely gone! All “high-end” condos and apartments now.

When was it fifty cents one way? And what was a loaf of bread or a gallon of gasoline. Things go up over time – except for working class pay checks and benefits.

Dick, you just need to shop around. That is why I change jobs every 5 years or so. I shop around till I find something better.

Very cool to see it come back, thanks Doug.

About a week after the reopening a part broke! It was supposed to reopen in about a week and I never heard another word! Please don’t tell me it is broke again!

Yep, site says: “The Angels Flight® Railway will be close momentarily today for testing”. … someone needs a small English lesson…

momentarily can mean two different things, so without context, we don’t know if it’s going to close at any time now, or that it will only close for a short time…

My guess is that it is ALREADY closed (blowing definition #1) and it will be closed all day (blowing definition #2).

Just having some fun, but really put someone with good skills on your site guys!

Greg, last I read in the LA Times or saw on the tee vee, it was closed again, but only 'til they find their you-no-what with both hands, and fix the roller or some such thing that done broke. Again. Some more.

I don’t get it. There are inclined railways in many locales and they seem to work fine. In Pittsburgh, PA, you got your, whatever-they-call-it, which is yuge, like a big platform that goes up and down the side of one of their famous hills. I’m sure that as soon as the pixel dust of my post settles, some one of you will chime in and 'splain the whole operation.
