Large Scale Central

And you thought shipping model trains was expensive

I happened by the EBT Rockhill yard yesterday just in time to see a 3 Bay hopper being loaded onto a flatbed trailer for transportation to parts unknown. The large heavy wrecker ‘rotator’ was rigged to the car, lifted it off its trucks and swung it around to set on the trailer. This took the better part of two hours.

I don’t know the official destination, but I can speculate that this is one of the hoppers that was part of the deal with Durango & Silverton for Porter 1203 (now EBT 19).

Loading sequence as seen from the trolley museum parking lot…

This last one taken from Meadow Street…

Great photo essay Jon.
I didn’t know of the D&S Porter, I guess that’s public knowledge?
If not, I guess it is now! :grinning: Very cool.

After digging a tiny bit, I see the account, e.g…

I had no idea that Porter made diesels.

To your point, per this link, “Most recently, in February 2025, it was announced that the East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) in Rockhill, PA acquired the locomotive from the D&SNG in exchange for another pair of two narrow gauge hopper cars.”

Ha “another pair of two narrow gauge hopper cars” Is that 4 cars? I think there must have been some money involved as well, or at least a donation form the for profit D&SNGRR to the EBTF. I can’t see trading a working locomotive for just two cars.

And not only is it super cool that it’s a Porter, but at some point it was remotored with an Alco prime mover. Love that Alco sound, I think a video or two of it running this weekend is in order.

They brought in this loco because the M-7 is not capable of handling full trains. The 19 could pull all the cars and more including 16 if a rescue was ever needed.
