Large Scale Central

An actual RR post! :)

We had some friends over to see the layout today, and I decided to clean up the one longish stretch of track and actually run a train on it. Could only go back and forth, but it was still fun. I was also pleased to discover that my modified Buddy L loco could easily pull six cars up the steepest grade (4%). I’ll post some pics in a day or two.

I’m still concentrating mainly on getting the rock work finished, and after that’s done I have a lot of bridges and trestles to build before the track can be completed. But I hope to have at least a little more track in running condition by the time we have our open house on June 16th. If any of you are in the San Diego area, you’re welcome to come!

WHAT!?!?!? Sandy Eigo, and you have to clean it up to run? Holy smokes. I ran through the 5 days of no power and limbs biger around than your arm first of the year! Going to the monthly meet at Marshall’s tomorrow. I’d posted photos once, gotta see what he’s done (second run of the year, I missed the first).

That is truely an inspirational railroad to look at. I’m sure it is fun to operate.

Ric ,
I agree , it uses the natural quite effectively —it must be one of the few advantages of living on a slope .
Dave , is your inside leg shorter than the outside one (like a haggis) for walking along the slope ? We need to know . Do you issue your visitors with a helper to go under one shoe for the same reason ?

Mike

Beautiful!

Heh! I haven't run anything on it in about 6 months or so. Concrete residue and other construction debris are a problem too.

Wow! Very impressive layout. How steep are the grades?

C'mon, Dave, you know that all that sun is hard on the rails! (tongue firmly planted in my cheek) It's even worse if you live inside the fog line!

Those are awesome pics. That doesn’t look like yours. Is it Marshall’s?

Ray,

If it’s Dave’s: not bad for a “non-existent” layout.

There are some major elevation differences in that layout!!!

Nah, it’s Marshall’s.
He learned to operate on my non-existant 1400+ feet of track.
Wet, windy, cold, but we ran.
Some of the grades are quite steep.
Had 8 or 9 guys.
The layout is one side of the stairs, the other side, and the upper mining/logging district.
One mine, load the tippers, haul them to the main tipple, dump them, shove them back to the mine, back down the grade, puck up the 2-bay under the tipple you left on the way up, dump the contents into the 2-bay, down to the north end, dump them on the standard gauge transfer.

Lots of stuff to do.
