Amtrak excursion to Asheville

Spent Halloween chasing the North Carolina Transportation Museum excursion train to Asheville. First caught the train at Clinch Crossing. Light conditions were less than ideal.

The train beat us to Old Fort, so we went ahead to the Swannanowa tunnel.

On to Asheville.

Engines running around the train. I believe engine no. 2 is known as the “Hiawatha”.

Looks like you had a good day.Glad you had a good day while some of us were stuck at home working

Sounds like you had lots of fun. Seems like all the fun things happen back east. You’d think with BNSF and UP in the Pacific Northwest they would do something like this, but no.

That would be the Autumn Leaf Special

:) I should have been home working on the RR ;) Ralph

When I went to school at High Point University NC I took the amtrac from Newark NJ to High Point often. Always a fun ride except having to get the train at 230AM.

The UP does it now and then with a string of yellow cars. Seen it several times. But it isn't advertised. You just have to be out and about when it comes thru town, I guess.

I saw the BNSF “Business train”, Green and cream “F” units with silver cars come thru only once.

Cool pics thanks for sharing. You can go to the UP web site and see when the trains run.

WHOA! Where did they get that Rio Grande Scenic car? I hope it’s going to head back to Colorado when they’re done with it…

John, most likely you’re seeing Operation Lifesaver or Employee Appreciation trains. UP runs them all over the country, anyone interested in riding an Operation Lifesaver train in June in the Denver area, contact me…

Thanks, Robert

Aahhhh…thanks for bringing this back up…Great shots Ralph!
