Amtrak baggage/mail car

I have acquired some spare parts from a LGB streamliner coach (roof and endwall mouldings). My intent is to make a ‘generic’ single door baggage car based on the converted streamliner coaches, to run with my Genesis set. The roof moulding as represented by LGb is inaccurate but suited to my purposes. My main question relates to how common these were as regards regular traffic use. Photographs abound up to recent dates, so they were in usage.

The car will only represent the type and will be a combination of LGB parts and sheet styrene. Trucks, by necessity, will be modern freight type, as suitable alternatives seem financially unavailable. I am not really fazed by using the incorrect truck type. On completion I will then need to source suitable decals.

I am thinking a one-piece rigid body/underframe configuration, with possibly a small underside cutout hatch at the entry door end to install window glazing to the two entry doors. The main doors will be the modern roller/shutter door style for simplicity.

Sounds like a great project! Hope to hear more about it soon.

The car I believe your referring too would be the 1700 baggage series. Yes they still run them but from my observation not so much with the Amfleet cars. You tend to see them more with the Superliners. Most of your baggage cars are old streamliner cars …I not real familiar with the LGB cars but I think they have flat paneled roofs so perhaps a 1200 series might be a better choice (if it catches your eye) check out #1260. http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/baggage/1260A.html or just go here and pick your poison http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/baggage/BAGGAGE.html
Note that the 1700 series cars are 85’ long(I’m in the process of scratchin up one myself for my Superliner consist) Note that all the baggage cars run streamliner trucks to the best of my knowledge (I’m sure Matt Doti may chime in and prove me different ;)…)

There is the option for a 1300 series which the first link doesn’t have as they are out of service now but you may find them appealing. I whipped one up a few years back (maybe 3yrs ago?) for a contest we had here and I run this car with my Amfleet consist …not sure where the link is but is in the forums> Anyway you can find the 1300 series cars here. http://www.hebners.net/amtrak/amtBAG1300.html
Hope this helps…Good luck …have fun and keep up posted with lots of pictures!

Dave,
the infamous LGB ‘rubber rule’ will be used to measure dimensions on this build. Overall length will be dictated by the stock LGB roof moulding for their streamliner cars. Yes, the roof moulding is the ‘flat’ (non-ribbed) type roof, so later 1200 series cars would apply. I did like the look of the 1700 series though.

After viewing Scott's streamliner photographs, an incorrect single door car would look more appropriate given the relatively short length of the stock LGB car.

Scott,
those ‘Superliner’ stripes look superb. I never realised how short the stock LGB streamliner cars are. Looks like mine will be more a caricature than a believable model.

Tim Mine are the Lgb streamline cars just repainted and striped!!!

I don’t think they look that bad…Well maybe they do look a little short…
