AMS Passenger cars

I have a 5 car set (Grande Gold) that has been on the shelf for a few years.

Why? Well, for starters, my Bachmann K27 needed new gearing. With the constant slow downs and running away down grade, I shelved that too. Got that fixed with a change-out of gears from Rodney.

Next, the trucks will go to Phil for bearings. Some light weathering too.

But my biggest bother is I don’t like running an empty passenger car consist. (I can only say I’m moving the cars to the service barn so many times.)

People for 5 cars would cost a fortune, if I could find some 1:20.3 passengers. I only need them half full to satisfy my anal needs. They don’t even need to be “period” dressed.

How can I complete this project without taking out a mortgage on my home?

Another thought is I have an 8 car LGB RhB Glacier Express train that is fully peopled. I can remove some of those (LGB & Prieser scale). But something tells me not to. I haven’t run that train in years as well.

What to do?

I have seen people on Ebay relatively cheap if you want ot paint them yourself. They might be good enough for your needs. maybe you could print some people silhouettes out and put those in there. When the train is speeding by it might be hard to see the lack of details.

John, I think Jeff, at Shawmut carshops can make some decals to fix on car windows which give the impression of passengers. You could give him a call or e-mail I guess to ascertain this.

Mik, just Mik, has the answer. You only have to wait until after Christmas.

John why don’t you just pull the people from your Swiss stuff and then get rid of that old Swiss train. I know just the guy to sell it to!

I’ll start that in the morning, Mike.
Which car first?

You might try some 1/24 scale people. Seats in some cars made by companies do not really scale out to what the car is. Might work out. I used 1/32 people in my Aristo cars and they looked okay. To get people to fit, many have cut off the legs so they have a seated figure.

Just pick one I want them ALL LOL

I have 10 AMS and 3 Bronson-Tate kits (that I need to get finished) that I need to populate also,

I’ve been looking at figures on thingiverse and I’m printing 3 right now to see if I can cut them at the waist and use them. Here is the 3 I’m starting with

Here is some more I’ll use if they come out OK

I’m printing them at a layer height of .010mm (.004" for you that do not know metric) and the 3 figures will take about 5 hours to print. It is trial and error to get the scale right. I may have to print 2 or 3 times to get it right.

I’m thinking that I’ll try to cast them before I cut them and then cast some that I cut for passengers.

I’ll send you some of the prints when I get the scale right and let you be the judge if you think they will work. I have your address from shipping the gearbox. I might even get Kristi to paint them.

These are the first prints and I might have to scale them up or down and reprint them to get them about right for scale.

Here they are a little over 2 hours into the print. They will need a small amount of cleanup

Rodney, sounds like an interesting project.
How would you get them to be sitting?
With those big windows on the cars,
You can easily see inside to the floors.
I am also going to battery power the lights in the cars.

“You might try some 1/24 scale people”
I usually look around at ECLSTS and pick up another Bachmann seated, adjustable fellow in a bowler hat, and then I dig in the “Just Plain Folks” boxes. Most of the latter are 1/24th, but they look good in my coaches and are not expensive.
