AMS Jackson & Sharp Coach veres Pullman

Two new AMS J&S coach’s arrived yesterday and I had one of them apart within the first hour to check out the interior lighting. I plan to convert the existing track supplied lighting to on-board recharable batteries. I am very impressed with the way the coach floor can be removed to access the interior and the new highly detailed brass trucks add low down weight to the coach. If the lighting contact wipes are removed from the back of the wheels, rolling resistance is greatly improved. I was interested in the size comparision between these new coach’s and a version of a D&RGW Pullman coach I scratchbuilt some years ago.

The Pullman is 2 inches longer than the J&S car and is slightly taller.

At the time of building the Pullman, no ready made 6 foot trucks where avaiable, so I scratchbuilt them from wood frames and used Ozark journals. Regards Wayne

I think they look good together. I didn’t see the size difference until you pointed it out. There is enough variation in size among 1:1 cars. Besides, you won’t notice the difference from a galloping horse.

The car that you built is outstanding. I wish that I had that kind of patience.

All three are great, but I’m really impressed with the one you scratchbuilt. Excellent work! Is it wood or styrene?

Wow, I never realized how big that Pullman of yours was. When I put the AMS car next to my scratchbuilt combine, the combine was shorter by 2", and sat around 3/16" lower. Alas, the weather here isn’t quite as cooperative as yours is at the moment, so photos will have to wait.

I’m not sure I’m quite as impressed with the removable floor as you, as mine took a considerable amount of “friendly persuasion” to finally free itself of the sides. That will be remedied, as I’m going to make the roof removable to gain access to the interior, leaving the floor to be permanently attached to the sides when I flesh out the interior.

Overall, though, I’m quite pleased with the car. It’s going to make a nice addition to the roster here.

I like them both. The scratch built Pullman is beautiful, and looks more real than the J&S coaches - probably because of the roof treatment and weathering. But those J&S coaches sure look nice too.

I was looking at the J&S cars on the Accucraft website and only see them listed in 4-packs. Since there’s no way I could ever spring for 4 at one time I’m hoping dealers will break up the sets.

Dealers are definitely breaking up sets. I got mine from Jonathan Bliese at Electric Steam and Modelworks. www.rctrains.com . (No affiliation beyond satisfied customer.) A photoshopped preview of what’s to become of it:

Can I get some tips on how to dis-assemble the AMS coach to put in passengers?
I ran it out side for the first time yesterday and she looked a little empty.
There is a small separation at each end of the car on the vestibule floor and I remember that there’s a fix for that as well, but I can’t find the article.
Thanks,

Never mind. I found Mr. Strong’s directions on that “other place.”
Now she’s populated with some old geezers and wenches.
