All quiet on the 0-4-0

Does anyone know how to diagnoise a sound problem on a new LGB 0-4-0? I just got this engine recently and the sound was fine. I went to run it on the club layout and there’s no sound. A new battery didn’t help. It runs fine.

HELP!

I know this sounds weird, but did someone turn the volume down?
You would not believe the times I’ve diagnosed member’s sound problems where they accidentally turned down the volume with their transmitters.
That’s the first thing I check now, before I tear into them.

Without having the loco to check, I can’t help you much. A loose wire to the speaker, etc??

John who in the club would do something like that…LOL

I thought that too last night but it was still set in the middle.

Doug, a common problem on LGB factory sound locomotives is the umbilical chord that connects the loco to tender. On the 0-4-0, no power is picked up by the tender wheels, so all power comes from the locomotive driver wheel pickups for sound operation. The wires commonly break at the umbilical chord end that is generally removed when separating the tender from the loco. I would start there. The connection can be remade but is a little tricky to accomplish (a club member should be able to do it for you). I would start by doing a continuity check on the umbilical chord wires. #4 is right track power to sound board and #5 is left track power.

Further to above, years ago, I did have one of the original sound tenders that simply stopped working (it ran perfectly for around 30 minutes and then failed). All normal troubleshooting methods failed to find a cause and the loco remains to this day without sound.

Check the switch in the engine!!!

And the cable to the tender.

Cables are available from Train-Li.

PS, I added power pickup to the rear tender axle on my tenders. I one of the LGB brush holders with a slight modification to mount it to these small wheels.
