Aircraft crashes into building in NYC

I just heard a report that possibly a Yankee pitcher was aboard.

LA Times:

“The plane was apparently owned by Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and the baseball team said a member of the Yankees organization was aboard, the Associated Press reported.”

Cory Lidle is confirmed dead. He was the pilot and was apparently having fuel problems as he called in a mayday and reported such. It is also presumed that one is dead from the apartment building.

First reports are that this was a Cirrus Design SR20 or SR22. That sleek single engine composite airplane is equipped with the “. . . revolutionary safety innovation known as the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS)”. That’s a ballistic parachute installed on the top of the fuselage and designed to be deployed in an emergency. It allows the entire airdraft to parachute to the ground gently enough for the occupants to survive. There have been a few successful real life emergency deployments. Sadly, not the case here.

Just as a thought…as it was brought to mind by what was said on a newsbriefing, the plane was originally at 1400’ as it came across Manhattan. When it started it’s loop to the left towards the building, it dropped 1000’ to 400’ when it struck the apartment. I wonder if in fact the parachute might have been deployed. Nobody has said so…but then again nobody has said no. That’s a very sudden drop in altitude. Even if he was over the river, the draft over Manhattan would have sucked the plane back towards land and the East side.

Whatever the cause and outcome, only the lawyers will win! :frowning:

Last report I heard on the parachute thing was 1400 was too low for it to deploy correctly.
