Ahhh, those were the days!

I just watched a movie called “Send in the Marines” or “Here come the Marines,” or some such. Probably nothing that the Commandant would want shown at a Birthday Ball, but fun, anyway.

There was a scene in which the protaginist, a Marine Corporal, picked a fight with a Sailor, a Radar Specialist Second Class (RD2). The RD was called an Operations Specialist while I was active because it included the ratings of Radar and Oceanographer’s Mate. Now it is called something else, G-d knows what.

Anyway, a huge fight broke out between the Sailors and Marines, one group trying to throw the other out of the bar, just like real life. Then the US Army Military Police (MP) entered the bar. The Marines and Sailors then banded together and threw the MP’s out of the bar, just like real life.

Brings back many good memories. Those were the days, my friend, we though they’d never end. I can remember the Gunnery Sergeant and I (the Doc) crawling under a table, drinking our beers and watching the melee.

Just like Warren’s Arab friend said, “Me against my brother. Attack my brother, my brother and I against the world.” If you’ve ever watched your children, you know this to be true.

True , so true , thanks.

Didja ever make it to the China Fleet Club in Hong Kong ?
Same thing there , shifting loyalties—you know , Army v. Navy , Navy v. RAF , Army Navy and RAF v. USN , and so on .
But , here’s the thing------we all of us finished up drinking together ,USN , RAF , Army , RN , US Coastguards , US Marines .
I wonder if the present service chaps still do the same ? I would like to think so . Because we had a common enemy then , boredom .
The common enemy is still there , but it sure ain’t boredom .

Mike , HK , 50’s ; Singapore 50’s ;French Indo China 50’s (Now Viet Nam). And a few other places too . Memories .

Indeed I did, everytime we pulled in. It was the first place we hit. We found that we usually got a better exchange rate for the Banka Bucks there than at the official exchange that took place in the Chief’s Mess. We usually changed just enough aboard ship to tet us to the China Fleet Club. Then on to Kowloon.
