Adding a smokebox number

My 2-Cyl Shay came with a blank number plate which I removed and stored. I bought a nice Shay Loco Works #2 number pin at Cass, cut the pin off and epoxied it to an Ozark Miniatures number plate that I ground flat. While running at Doug’s in Ottawa, the smokebox got a little hotter than usual and melted the white metal casting causing the number to fall off.

I’m ready to try again and won’t bother with white metal. Doers anyone make a brass blank number plate?

I suppose I could always silver solder up something from a few pieces of brass stock and tap it for threads. I’m wondering if I might melt silver solder with smokebox heat as easy as the white metal.

I used all Trackside detail parts on my shay. J&B weld has held them on fine.

OK - Trackside Details it is. I’ve bought from Clem before. He’s pleasant to deal with even on a small $5 order.

I’d still like to attach with a machine screw from inside the smokbeox in case I ever wish to reverse the change. I can’t tell from that page if the backs are flat or if they have a mounting stud I could tap.

I checked out the TD website [ http://www.tracksidedetails.com/index.html ] and there is more information, but no rear view so I sent them an email.

David from Trackside Details responded to my email almost immediately. The number plates do have a stud that can the threaded so I am all set. Just need to order.

Ask Alan Briggs for milling and etching some numberplates for you . He´s a friendly and helpful guy !

Hi Joe (or Jo which is fine too) - I ended up using the original Accucraft number plate and sanding it smooth to accept the #2 pin…
