Add On Sound for LGB Forney

I have 3 track power LGB Fornies.

I want to istall sound in them but there is very little room

A few years back I installed older Phoenix sound systems in a couple of my LGB Moguls and was very happy. However in perusing the Phoenix web site I couln’t find installation instructions for the Forney.

I am also considering installing LGB’s 65001 American Steam Sound Unit in them.

Does anyone have experience with Forneys or words of wisdom

Dean,
if using the LGB #65001 then you would need to disassemble the box and mount the items individually. Depnding on the age of the locomotives, there i8s two ‘track power’ pins on the main circuit board to attach the sound board power supply. The LGB Mogul bell/whistle reed switch pack (#65012?) could be easily attached to the Forney trailing truck and attached to the sound board, giving track magnet operated bell and whistle.

The following link provides instructions for fitting DCC and Phoenix sound to the Forney (late model with decoder interface board), but general instructions would apply to most Forneys. Ignore the DCC parts and concentrate on the assembly/disassembly instructions.

Tim,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. I never thought about taking the 65001 apart and fitting the pieces in the Forney.

The Link will really be a big help. Especially the steps to disassembling the Forney and putting it back together

I have installed Phoenix sound in several forneys. The speaker, 2k2 and battery all fit in the fuel bunker at the rear and I used the LGB reed sensors on the rear truck.
Since it is track power, you can take power from the rear power sockets. I was also able to install the volume control and programming jack.

For access to the fuel bunker, only 4 screws are removed, 2 on the bunker, and the rear 2 on the cab. Bunker has locking tabs on the front at the cab.

Dan,

I just heard from Phoenix. John confirms that everything will fit in the bunker and I can pick up power from the rear sockets just like you said. I have an LGB 65012 “Sound Unit/function trigger” laying around that I will try to use to pick up the bell and whistle.

thanks to all for all of the help, Deano

Howdy y’all. I’m looking at doing a similar installation.

Is it possible to access the main circuit board after only removing the bunker? Also, will the LGB 65012 Mogul bell/whistle reed switch pack work with a Phoenix board?

The LGB reed board that mounts on the mogul and 69232/2-4-0 tender truck is nothing more than 2 reeds in a weather proof case. Middle wire is common.

I have used these in several engines and I soldered the wires to the 6500x sound unit. This unit has the middle connection as common.

To get into the bunker, I only loosen the cab on the forney and remove the bunker screws.

To get at the main board in a forney is no fun. Boiler must slide forward and clear the weight. And when doing this, the band comes off the boiler.

I have done this many times when installing decoders in forneys. It almost takes 3 hands to reassemble!!!
