Accucraft WD baldwin

WOW! That movie, and others listed alongside, are great!
That is something, how these small railroads were built and run.
Lot’s of GI labor around to “get 'er done”.
And lots of interesting open railcar loads to model.

Saw several 2-6-2T’s, but didn’t catch site of any 4-6-0T’s.

Well, I’ve got over 4 hours runtime on my WD now, great little engine.
Had a few minor problems with the pilot truck binding up on traversing S curves, but fixed that by installing larger slide washers.
The safety valve is a typical Accucraft constant feathering type, and a new Wee Bee pop valve will fix that.

I’ve heard lately that the earliest run of WD Baldwins had problems with journal boxes installed upside down and side rods withe elongated holes just to
get the engine to roll. That created a poorly running drivetrain with severe wheel hop.
My engine is Serial #047, and it runs well, so apparently the problem engines were built earlier yet.
Just passing on info for future buyers… Kind of like the C-19 fiasco…

That’s great Jim. I notice the pop valves at the Scranton steamup in January and thought I might like to try one on my Shay. What is your source for the Wee Bee pop valve and about how much $ ?

Jon, you can get them from Jim Saunders at Wee Bee Loco Parts - email him at; [email protected]

He custom makes them per order, set to any pressure requested. I’ve got a 40 psi on the Plantation, and a 60 psi coming for the WD.
The price is $35 for the actual pop valve, plus $10 for the Accucraft M10 adapter, plus $5 shipping/handling = $50 total.

When I changed out the pop valve on my Plantation I gained 10 minutes more run time on a boiler fill up - the factory pop wastes that much water
constantly feathering off steam.

Thanks Jim - I sent him an email.
