A4s on 2 year Loan for "Mallard 75"

I know this is 1:1, but thought some of you would appreciate the news anyway. Last evening I got my copy of the May/June BRMNA Journal (BRMNA = British Railway Modellers of North America). The editor’s column, The Signal Box, had information that the A4 60010, Dominion of Canada, at Exporail, Montreal and the A4 60008, Dwight D. Eisenhower, at the Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin, will be transported back to the National Railway Museum, York, England for full cosmetic restoration to their original condition in 1937/1938 as part of the “Mallard 75” celebration. They will remain at the national museum in York for two years. Mallard 75 is a celebration of the Mallard’s unbeaten speed record for steam locomotives of 126 mph, set in 1938.

I’m sure visitors to the museum will enjoy the sight of three LNER A4 class locomotives displayed together.

Best,
David Meashey

P. S. Pete Thornton has indicated there could be as many as six A4s together. Perhaps tac may be able to get there for a photo once everything is in place next year?

That’s good news, Dave, thanks.

The Mallards were very special not only for their speed but also for their unique modern streamlined appearance, and it is absolutely fantastic that someone is undertaking this cosmetic restoration.

I was born in England, and I remember that as a little boy, those locos, like something from outer space today, excited every English kid’s imagination…

Yeah John; My personal favorite locomotive & train is the Reading RR Crusader. It resembles a close cousin to the A4s.

My personal favorite, the Great Northern S2. The ipidomy of raw, brute power.

It’s a date, if I’m spared. I will take copious amounts of pix that will keep EVERYBODY who is interested, interested.

Do you want me to start camping out up there this week?

“Do you want me to start camping out up there this week?”

TAC;

Best to wait until closer to the actual event. I would not wish to raise the ire of Mrs. Tac by going along with such a suggestion. Besides, you and your various boys need time for boiling water, shooting firearms, and so forth.

Best,
David Meashey

All true, but we really don’t mind, me and the boys. I tell you that this is going to be a wondrous sight, even if those British teeny trains are not your forté.

Steve, it sure is a beauty, but stuffed and mounted is not the way I like’em. For a man who lives only a short way away from Portland, I’m surprised at you…SP&S Northern #700 awaits your attention, Sir. tac, ig & The ‘Fans of 700’ Boys

There are actually 6 LNER A4 locos in existance, and 2 or 3 of them are usually running on the UK mainline at any one time. I'm sure the NRM will be collecting all of them together for a photo op, as they did for Mallard a few years ago when they got 3 of them in a line in different colors.

TAC; Those British teeny trains are one of my fortes. I still pay my dues to BRMNA (British Railway Modellers of North America), although my OO trains are currently shelf queens. Still, my Hornby Mallard is proudly on display in that china cupboard with the other OO and HO shelf queens. (I now wish that I had not sold my Wrenn A4 - not as detailed, but what a runner!) Even have a couple of the old Airfix items - think they are known as Dapol now. Someday I shall have to buy some code 100 HO gauge track so they can romp on special occasions. Best, David Meashey P.S. Oh, and there’s also this Ratio kit my penpal in Fleet, Hampshire sent me about 30 years ago. I’m afraid I took some liberties with it after reading an editorial in Model Railways by C. J. Freezer concerning manure transport wagons.

Dave - I have a suitably modified Bachmann A4 ‘Dominion of Canada’ with correct stainless steel letters and numbers…

Should not worry.

With a very nice article in the latest UK GR magazine, he can afford to hire a porter (as in sherpa)…

An article by me, you say?

So where is MY freebie copy, I wonder?

I’m telling you that if I have to BUY one, then it’s the last time I write anything for the magazine.

Humph and grump.
