A WinXP problem

Hi all,

Just on the off chance that one of the gurus has a solution.

Problem: When deleting anything the mouse will still move but the desktop seems frozen i.e. no action when clicking anywhere on the desktop (either left or right click). The task manager can be called up (via keyboard) and the only processes running are “System” and “System idle”. BTW the mouse will work to close the task manager!

Any ideas anyone or a similar experience?

TIA

Low resources, Low Memory. How much memory do you have ? Conflict while other programs are running. Check your task manager.

try doing a defrag on your C/: drive. go to.- start-All Programs-accessories-system tools-disk defragmenter. Run the anylaize on your drive and see if it needs defragging. note you will need at least 15% free space to do this.
I hope this helps
regards
Dave

Did both of the above mentioned.

Lots of mem, lots of free space on all drives, i.e. 61Gb free on C drive which is strictly for OS and related “junk”.

TOC mentioned “Process Explorer” on the phone; it’s installed and I’ll be brave and run the “what the f… happens?” after supper.

How full is your recycle bin?

My XP was doing the same thing, notice hard drive was very busy during the hang times. I bought a video card with lots of RAM, now it doesn’t seem to do it anymore. I think I was overloading the page file.

  1. Right-click My Computer, left-click Manage
  2. Left-click Event Viewer, dbl-click System
  3. Dbl-click any entries in the System log prefixed by a red circle with a white X

I don’t know why you’re experiencing this behaviour. The System log may help you diagnose the issue.

Thanks Dave!
