Large Scale Central

A wainwright's shop

For those who don’t know them weird obsolete words, that’s a shop than makes horse drawn wagons… I have no idea what this building was really used for, but it sounded like a good business for it.

Just like the B&O station its made mostly from that Coroplast stuff and wood

Kim had some birch dollhouse siding she wasn’t using, so she let me have it…

Easy side almost done… Not bad for an evening’s work.

Day 2… Day job interferes with construction, but still some progress to show…

More tomorrow, maybe…

You’re on a roll Mik, You should have plenty of buildings for your spring showing at this rate. If you build too many I’ll let you know where to send the extras

You work just as fast as me. LOL Looks good so far. I love the old buildings. We have a lot of old buildings like that in my area. We also have two towns that are preserved and dated 1800’s. They are complete with grist mills, school houses blacksmith shops etc. Great places for pictures and ideas. http://www.millbrooknj.com/

Mik,
You’re making me feel guilty. You’re getting a lot accomplished while I’ve been getting
nothing done myself :frowning:
Ralph

How to get a bunch of stuff accomplished without pizzing off your significant other:

  1. Try to get her involved… ask for help. – only moderately successful, Kim will paint figures for me, and some trim. She’ll also hold the other end of the stick when I need to cut something, or go look for tools if I ask nice, that’s about it for now… Still, definitely a keeper!

  2. Sit beside her with a TV tray (or ‘borrowed’ cafeteria tray) while she’s on the computer, watching TV, reading a book, crocheting, etc. – only works if you’re not gonna make loud noises, a big mess, or a stink…

  3. Work on a card table in the bedroom while she’s watching TV just before bed (works GREAT if she watches cop or ‘reality’ shows with a lot of crashing and screaming anyway)… This is actually where I get most of my work accomplished… unfortunately, my (multiple) scrap and project boxes are starting to take over again, so today is clean up the bedroom day for the Mikster.

Mik,
You are getting me inspired. I have some of that I got from old political signs.

Has lots of character.

There’s a barn south of Macomb on US 67 that I always liked. Stone foundation.

A bit more progress to show…

LOL Thats how i get out of things. Sexual advances work all the time. LOL

I love all the angles on this one. It’s amazing what you can build from those old signs.

Mik,
I see you discovered LEMAX stone. I buy that stuff after the holiday dirt cheap…good stuff…I use the brick too.

Since I had this lovely huge covered area, I was trolling the internet looking for ideas of what to put IN it, when I found this picture of the smaller blacksmith forges at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.

I redesigned it a bit to fit the space, and came up with this…

A wooden anvil? Well, why not? It’s a couple bits of 3/8" square basswood and a bit of lathe that I shaped using a milling cutter in a Dremel

Here’s where we are so far. It still needs a toolbench, vice, bellows, and a blacksmith. I’m thinking of a half wall on this secton rather than just the railing…

Unfortunately, that’s all for a day or so, as I’ve run out of contact adhesive. “May your anvil never rust from lack of use.” (Old blacksmith’s blessing)

“The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands.” (Longfellow) Um, well, this guy must be just an 'prentice, because he sure doesn’t have the shoulders of a master hammerman. But he was here. An LGB mogul engineer, plus Fujimi arms and he’s OK from 5 feet away.

A Bachmann bench vice got reworked into a rather nice looking leg vice, and it only took 5 minutes!

Finished toolbench

The installed siding got a wash of watered down black acrylic paint, and Wimpy the smith got put to work tonight. It still needs a bunch more tongs, files and other tools, and the bellows made yet, but I think it has promise.

Tomorrow I’ll put siding on the last wall, do a black wash on that, then a brown wash all around, and start on the roof. I’m considering hinging it and putting dividers inside to store diecast vehicles between runs.

5 months of no progress on this thing? Shame on me! It’s still not quite done, but it got a roof on it and hauled over to take up space anyway.

Mik, you probably already said it but what did you use for the floor in the shop? I’m thinking I could “adopt it” for the platform for one of my depots.

Hey be to hard on yourself, I get on one thing then go off in another direction or go to the CCRy and operate. Of course, a total knee replacement and recovery does not help much either.

Looks good! You spur me to add people to my RR as well, looks more real.

Paul

the floor is Lemax vinyl brick stuff. The foundation is their cobblestone.

My apologies on the pictures. They will return on the 22nd. I’m NOT paying to upgrade for something that has happened once in two years Sure feels like extortion when they hold your property for ransom because you actually USED their ‘free’ service!
