A visit to Jim Strong's WOODLAND RAILWAY

Anybody who’s been into Garden Railroading for awhile has probably read a few articles in GR magazine about this layout. I remember reading a few articles about it in the early 90’s when I was just starting out in the hobby. It one of those layouts you read about and think to yourself, “One of these days that’s what I’d like to accomplish”. As luck would have it, Kevin Strong was in town visiting his parents and sent out an invite to Bruce Chandler, who sent out an invite to me, for an operating session on Saturday. What a thrill that was since I’ve been an admirer of Jim’s layout since I first read about it. The pictures I’ve seen of it and, no doubt, the pictures I took don’t do it justice. But here goes anyway… Here’s Jim with his grandson Andrew(I hope I got his name right), doing some switching.

Bruce and Jean Chandler take a break in the park like setting.

Cinderella’s Castle sits on a hill over looking the railway.

Jim built a model of the Oakton, MD B&O station that was recently restored. Awesome building!

Jim gives some instructions to a few of the neighborhood kids who stopped by to “play trains”.

and they’re off…

passing through Woodland Jct.

Bruce and Jean chat with Jim Kottkamp and his wife

Kevin and his son ponder the switching arrangement in Woodland Jct. Kevin had his hands full.

Finally, the bottleneck is cleared…

Toward the end of the day, RGS #20 had a minor collision with Andrew’s critter #25 on the trestle. Fortunately no one was injured and the track was soon cleared.

Soon after, the the collision is forgotten about and Andrew busies himself in the yard.

I had a wonderful time and would like to thank both Kevin and Jim Strong for the invite and for hosting this event. It certainly made my day…

Cool. Thanks for sharing the pictures

It was a nice time and much thanks to the Strongs for the invite and a chance to meet some new folks. I’ve got a few pictures, and some are quite similar! Jim with the castle. He has repainted all of the buildings since I was last there a few years ago and they really do look nice.

A view of the Woodland Railway. That’s the station just to the left of center. Everything is very nicely landscaped.

Andy had his own agenda. I was going to take the passenger train, but he was having too good of time playing with the cars. He’s really good at putting the cars on the track…we thought it was because he was so much closer to the ground.

I did get one car from him - a shot with my RS-3 on the trestle on the way to the upper level.

On the way up, you cross this pair of double slip switches. It works very well and Jim says that it’s less troublesome than any of his other switches.

Another view of the castle with a freshly painted house.

Jim picked up this baggage cart when they were restoring the old Washington Union Station. You can tell it’s been there awhile.

My motorcar heads up from the lower level.

Jean was driving the motorcar.

Wow! What a treat. The track work that caused Kevin to be a “head scratchin” sure looks complex.

Thanks for posting.

Great pictures Ken, That station in the 4th and 5th photo are awesome. Great layout thanks for sharing.

Kevin mentions his Dad’s GRR often. It’s great to finally see it.
The B & O station is awesome. Everything else, equally so !
Ralph

What a wonderful looking layout… thanks for sharing the visit and pictures…

From those photos you’d never know I was there! But Jack Thompson, Jerry Bohlander and I were also taking pics. Here’s Ken with his back to the camera, with Jim Strong, Bruce and Jean Chandler, and Jerry and Kevin in the background.

Live steam produces some neat effects. I had just opened the blowdown as the loco cooled.

And finally, our pal Kevin and Jack Thompson working the upper yard. Kevin brought his diesel to play.

Thanks Pete. I would have mentioned you guys but I couldn’t remember all the names. And I did have a picture of you, but in an awkward situation, retrieving your loco from inside a tunnel…

Plus since you and I were running at about the same time, I didn’t get any pix.

Looked like a great day, the Woodland Railway is one of my favorites.

Alec

great pictures of a really great RR
Dennis

Wow! That’s more pix than I’ve ever seen of the Woodland Ry.! Thank you all so much. A fine railroad indeed and an icon if ever there was one. Congratulations to Jim for a beautiful empire.

Thanks guys for all the fine pictures & narration. I too have followed The Woodland RY in GR for many, many years. Nice to see more pictures of it. When back in my HO days I used to enjoy stories about the A&LP, G&D, V&O, SVRR and AM. I put Jim Strong’s railroad on the same level.

Wow great pictures. I have always loved seeing pictures of the Woodland RR. Love the moss covered ground, track work and structures. Always good stuff. Guess Kevin survived the trip with two little ones lol

Just got home yesterday, as a matter of fact. Had a great trip, and a great day running trains. We’ll have to do it again next year. I shot some video of the railroad while I was there, so I’ll put something together over the next few months. Thanks for posting the pics. And nick, no surfers were mugged in the procurement of that shirt, but it did help that I bought it after the cruise ships left Oranjestad (Aruba) and the vendors dropped their prices back down to “regular tourist” levels.

Later,

K

What an incredible collection of large scalers to hang out with! And what a great looking, legendary railroad to see in detail. Thanks for posting, Ken.
