A trip on the Grasslander

There are five of us here in southern Sydney banded together under the name GRASS (Garden Railway Addicts of Sutherland Shire). After a long, hot day operating we adjourned inside for refreshments and I mentioned having watched Eric Schade’s movie of his trains’ trip from Maine to Maryland. We all agreed it would be a good idea to do a similar thing showing a train running through all our garden layouts which would use the same coaches for the whole trip with locos supplied by each of the railways and would show off the best of our lines.

The train purports to run from Australia’s tropical north on an inland route to the more temperate southern climes. With our GRASS name the obvious name for the train was:

THE GRASSLANDER

So if you’ve got 20 minutes to spare, pack your bags and come on the journey.

What a really cool idea!

Wonderful video.

So far that is a great video and great idea. I watched half of it and will check out the rest later. That was funny when the pilot on the loco caught a twig and derailed then the sounds of sirens in the distance AND the front page extra extra detailing the crash. Very clever.

I wonder did you guys ship the train around or were you close enough to drive it?
I remember a few years back someone here wanted to send around a boxcar to be photographed on different layouts but the cost of the post was too much so decals were sent around instead.

Happy RRing

Thanks for the comments Todd. We all live within 5 miles of each other, so no problem moving the coaches.

I just watched the rest of the video and The Sandstone and Termite Railway is really amazing. I was impressed by the viaduct, that tall spindly trestle and did you actually carve out real boulders to make a cut for your train track? It sure looked it.
I liked the video camera work and the view from the cab and from inside the couch looking out. Was that you and your wife in the dining car?
It looks like you have mile of track and you had grades to conquer like I did.

I’d say the “GrassLander” is a success. Well done.

What a nice job you guys did on this video. Thanks for sharing, Regards,Ron

Very neat video and story that goes with it… Tks for sharing with us from across the pond.

Thanks Todd and the others who commented.

Yes, I had to use a jack hammer on some sections of sandstone to get the track through. Luckily is pretty soft rock and mostly I used an angle grinder and hammer and chisel

And that’s me and Pauline in the Indian Pacific dining car ( a few years ago).
