Large Scale Central

A Station / Freighthouse Build

Randy, I feel your pain! If I were ever to build a station I would need to model the New Haven’s ornate roof supports…

I’d actually wanted to put an overhang on my house and do that, but unfortunately the roof is already too low to extend further. That is a nice jig you made - and the supports will look great as-is.

A lambs tongue is a chamfered edge that doesn’t go to the end …Jon my back porch that I built to match the house is full of them. They are in a lot of old time woodworking (staircases, brackets, corbels) the idea was to pick them out with another color or stain or for shadow accent…BTW my Lemo Tower has them under the bay window brackets.

Sorry for the derail Randy…I really love the bracket jig

Further progress this afternoon. Sorry Rooster, no lamb’s tongues. You can come over and carve them if you wish. I’ll supply a sharp knife.

lamb’s tongue?

Here’s a pic of a “lamb’s tongue”, as it relates to carpentry:

That’s some darn fine woodworking Randy !

Did some more work on this today. Started by doing the roof overhang beams and then onto sheeting the roof.

And now all roof sheeting done. Trackside view

And the rear

Now onto all the finicky bits. Doors, windows, trim and roofing.

Great stuff Randy.
Very nice!

Alec

Great looking station keep us posted please
Dennis

Good work!!

Really coming along there Randy.

wonderful looking station, Randy

okay I am at a stand still. I want to paint the body of this with standard CPR tuscon red or cabernet red. I have researched dozens of plans of old CPR stations and they all specify the colors that they were to be painted. Body, trim, sashes, etc. But the plans all specify the colors by standard CPR numbering. E.G. No. XX for body, No. XX for window and door trim, etc. Anyone have a clue what the CPR numbers represent color wise? I tried to find out but no luck.

Randy,

Here’s a link to a guy that documented building a CPR depot in HO. The article includes painting and color photos. Scroll down just a bit and you’ll find the beginning of the article. His paint and info might help you decipher the colors and their locations.

Thanks Richard, I am leaning towards the cream color for the trim as well. Am I starting to get a little anal on this. yep.

Anal would have been champhers, lambs tongues , and fluted beams in a 4 color paint trim. So maybe not :) :) ;)

We won’t let you slide Randy…Now is the time to get anal!

That’s really turning out nice, and worth the effort you’re putting into it!

Fantastic job so far!!!

Finally made a little progress today. The floor/foundation complete. It’s made from 3/4" X 11 1/4" composite fascia board. This will be ‘planted’ in its spot and the actual building will just sit on it. The floor.

The underside showing that I doulbled up the thickness of the composite to give a 30" high foundation wall. tThe joint will be filled, sanded and painted to resemble old concrete.

And the floor again showing corner blocking to hold the building in place. I will not attach the Station to its floor. I will leave it removable for maintenance, etc.

And the Station sitting on the foundation.
