Large Scale Central

A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

Nice work Ken. I believe you need to come around 180º to get to the Susquehanna.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Ken,

Love the trees/shrubs on the tables. As you have probably already checked out, you shouldn’t have any problems with moisture retention if you have surrounded the pots with a soil layer.

Your probably tired of hearing this, but, “on my railroad” I had the trees planted in “planter boxes” about 4 inches larger than the pots in all directions and filled with peat moss/potting soil for moisture retention. The trees were planted in their pots for root control and I had no problems over a 4-5 year period of 100 + degree summers at 6-10 percent humidity. Irrigated, of course, three days a week.

Beautiful Railroad you have developing there.

Rick

That was my plan, too, Rick. In the areas where the bench is higher I was thinking of using planter boxes for some of the taller shrubs using the PVC board. I just wasn’t too sure how it would work. Now that I know someone else has already done it, and succeeded, I’ll go ahead with that. I did cut the bottoms off of the pots before I planted them. The smaller ground covers I’ll just plant directly on top of the bench.

That was one of the reasons why I wanted the bench work closer to the ground so I could avoid using planter boxes.

Dave, once I get to the end of the trees, it does a 180. But that might not be till next year…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I did get most of the rolling stock moved out of the garage on into the shed.

There are still 4 passenger cars and 4 stock cars left to move, but I ran out of storage tracks.

Ken,

Send them to me and I will “store” them for you! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

okie dokie…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Hey, that’s some nice storage. Things down your way are looking pretty good. I can’t wait to see how this thing keeps snaking through your yard. Do you have enough switches left to finish everything, or will you be building some this winter?

Nice storage! I sure wish I had room for something like that.

It might be time to hose down those cars and remove all that weathering dust you’re so fond of…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I should have enough to get me through this year. Hard to say with with all the changes I make as I go. I just lifted 3 that were inside the garage. They were Llagos Creek switches, I believe. Just have to change out the ties on them. I’ll need a whole lot more before I’m done. Got a lot more left hand switches then right hand at the moment.

Well, Bruce, if I get a chance to run them more maybe the wind can blow the dust off…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Ken,

Great to see that you’ve touched ground. I know it was coming, but its great to see it calculated out.

Also like the shed shelves. Now you’ve got plenty to keep you busy on rainy days.

Hey Ken,

Just showed Jan your progress and we got talking about “operations”.

Have you thought about incorporating the storage yard in to the “operations”? Maybe while one train is out switching a second crew can be using the interchange track lead to build or pull another train. You storage tracks look good enough to store complete pre-staged trains.

I have given that a thought, Ric. Just not a whole lot yet, but that was something I had in mind when I built it…

Once I get the next town up and running, I’ll deliberate on how I want Operations to flow.

Since it’s usually just a one-man show here, putting the next train together by way of the Manifest is just part of the fun.

Ready to start on the next town: Mancos

Still needs to be leveled up a bit.

Looking good. I suppose the next extension will be down the hill to the right and the bench will rise again (just like the South) ??

The last cedar tree and the bush about the property line?

Actually Jon, we’ll going to left around the trees to the backside. Property line’s a good 10-15’ past the trees on that end and behind the tree line.

OK, sounds good, Looks like the grade falls away in that direction too. Fred will tell you to cut down ll the trees to avoid the debris that will clog your switches. I have resisted his advice on this and found that a good stream nozzle for my hose will wash most of it out of the switches. That’s why there isn’t any ballast around or under the moving parts of all my mainline switches. Doesn’t look as pretty, but much easier to keep working.

Ken, are you going to add an edge board, equal to the height of the ladder, to keep the to be installed rocks and dirt from getting underweigh?

Nice progress, Ken… Maybe I should have called you when we started our railroad…

Yea, Steve, something like this , it’s called “brick molding”…
