A GoPro ride on teh Candlewood Valley Scenic Railway

My friend Al set up his GoPro on my railroad after we got home from our railfan trip to see Flag Coal 75. I didn’t have time to do any clean-up or prep work so there is a bunch of trash lying around and the indoor division is a mess. But it’s a fun look

Nice ride Jon. Gave me a better perspective of what your RR looks like too.

I bought a smaller helmet cam, but never took into consideration that it doesn’t have sound. But with the size I can clamp to the side of the tender and it gives a different view of things. It’s about 1" square and about 3" long and doesn’t weigh much.

I have been considering picking up a “GoPro”…Is the “fish-eye” effect the only option available or was that the way your friend set up the shot?

Thanks for shooting your layout…I like “going for a ride” on other peoples layouts!

I don’t know enough about them to answer, but I believe there is only the wide angle lens. It looks good except when you get close to large objects.

Jon,

You have a real nice long run there. How many feet of mainline do you have?

One area just before the tracks go into the basement where the cement work is with the window just cries out to be detailed into a major train station as a flat. Room for a nice long, wide waiting platform. The window itself is unobtrusive enough to fit into the scene fairly well too.

Nice video and thanks for the ride.

Thanks Richard, The run is not as long as it looks in the video. I started with 5 boxes of 5 foot lengths, I’ve used about 4 plus some brass on the indoor section; so a little over 240 feet total including sidings.

Thanks also for the idea on the flat. I’ve never really considered that section as anything other than a connector between the garden and the indoor section. Hard to see from the video, but it is elevated on PT plank roadbed. I thought I’d like to replace that with a trestle, but your idea would lean more toward making it look like the track was above a concrete retaining wall. That could be done with foam or PVC Scrap from the sign shop.

Very nice Jon. A great way to start the day with a ride olong your layout. I have to get up their this summer.

Shawn - I’d love to have you over. Railroad is probably in about as good a shape as it’s going to get. Our “weekends” never seem to fit - Are you working July 4?

Jon,

That is fantastic! Having been around for the building of most of your railroad by forums and emails, all your work is really shines. I guess the biggest surprise to me is the height of the bridge going into the basement, I thought it was higher. Your roadbed sure seems smooth and true and your cut through the rock wall and the shot of “the Big Cut” and “Fred’s Final Resting Place” is great! Great video, thanks for sharing.

Less than 4 weeks to go!

That is by sure luck this year. I've done very little repair and never finished ballasting. A very mild winter must have helped.
