Large Scale Central

A fun little project

Here’s a rustic outhouse which I recently finished:

All the “wooden” parts of the outhouse are actually styrene. I used a razor saw to add wood grain, then sprayed it with a coat of gray primer. Over this, I brushed on thin washes of Apple Barrel acyrlic paints, starting with “Country Tan” and then progressing to darker shades of brown. The corrugated metal is aluminum from soda cans. The rolls of toilet paper are made from styrene tubing. The paper hanging off the roll is a strip of thin paper from a cash register receipt, coated with Apple Barrel flat white paint. The door handles are made from brass.

Here’s how it looks on the layout, where it is part of the Cliffside Mine complex:

Unfortunately, it had to be positioned at an angle that obscures most of the interior. There will be others elsewhere on the layout, so I’ll have another opportunity for a better display.

Looks great Ray. A metal outhouse has gotta bake in the summer though! :o
and where’s the crescent moon on the door?

-Brian

For some reason, metal outhouses are quite common in the ghost towns and mining camps of the West, while crescent moons are not so common.

Nice work Ray. Even put in the seat wear I see. Ha Ha

Fantastic.
Brings back some not so pleasant memories.
It was never the heat that bothered me, but the cold.
Ralph

Not to be a kill joy or anything Ray, The Out house is fantastic, but I was always taught that s#!+ always rolls down hill. Wouldn’t it be saver to the house at a lower level? Judging from the stains below the seat, I know I wouldn’t want be bunked below who evers doing that

I’m glad I didn’t have to dig the hole for the ‘long drop’ in that rock!

Looks good Ray!!... Richard has a good point about gravity......However we want to see the hole in the rock or it cannot be authentic! Whats up with the stains on the front!!! Were they intentional as they look that way? :)

We aim to please. You aim too, please.

Yes, the stains were added intentionally! I’m a nut for detail.

It’s hard to tell from the pic, but the outhouse was positioned over a crevice in the rocks. There is a small stone wall sealing off the end of the crevice facing the cliff, and providing support for the outhouse.

Ray,

You said: “I’m a nut for detail.”

Will you add flies and… olfactory stimulation?

Joe

LOL! As a matter of fact, I briefly considered the possibility of including a sound effect of buzzing flies, but decided it would be too much trouble and would likely go unnoticed anyway.

Great work Ray, might I make a suggestion, how about a coiled rattler inside the door on the floor, happened once (corn snake luckily) not funny when you gotta go and are not looking to closely.

LMAO…good ideas here!(flies and snakes)
Ok who is gonna make the 1:24 sears catalog!
