A Dozer Find!

Monday I went to the local transfer station with a load of trash and of course I stopped at the Swap Shop on the way out. In the past I have found little treasures for the RR and kit bashing and this time I wasn’t disappointed.

How cool is this little Dozer? It was just screaming at me to beat it up.

So I went to work on it. The cab was too small for G scale so it came off. I then took it apart and painted the whole thing a rusty primer colour. When that was dry I started smearing it up with browns, black and grey craft paint plus spots of yellow to make it look like it still had a bit of original paint left.

The seat was tiny more like for a “O” scale figure so that came out and a new seat went in plus 2 levers made out of bent 4 penny nails to help run the dozer.

I usually don’t weather anything extreme as this but I thought I’d see how far it could go. I think this will make a terrific flat car load.

The process was rather easy and I would encourage anyone to give it a try.

Todd,

I hope that wasn’t a LGB dozer. You know how valuable those can be. Nice score and great weathering.

Wow,(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif) well done Todd.

Good find, and terrific ageing !

My latest find (at my fave thrift store) was a “kid state 1995” move 'n sound ‘Cat’ dozer, last yr for less than $2. sound buttons still work and one blade shaft broken but for the $ perfect candidate for weathering and leave trackside somewheres or in SoLoSalvage yd. to age away till they decide to sell for scrap  It’s like this one of uTube fame https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoQKzbcidt4 ?

…I think this will make a terrific flat car load. …

What I’ve done in the past (10 yrs bk ?) is set 2-3 of these (plastic) cheaply acquired construction equipment close to trackside. Majority are broken to sun and maybe erroneous step-on, but the thyme etc. the last couple yrs as grown quite nicely over them to simulate overgrown delibidated equipment left behind by a long forgotten construction co. that first did the grade work for the rwy.

Thank you guys.

I think this will either find a spot on a flat car or sitting in or outside the tin barn I built for the challenge this year or maybe alongside the 4 skid shacks.

I am a fan of dilapidated equipment Doug in the future I will have to make more frequent trips to the swap shop and maybe get score again.

Very nicely done Todd. You really captured the look of a 1950’s or 60’s dozer. I’d say it could pass for an Allis Chalmers HD5 or a Cat D4. It really has the right look to it as far as the weathering and color use. As proof to the right look and colors used check out these photos of my 1953 Allis HD5. It’s like you had and used them like you did those barn pictures. Speaking of, will this be parking in or near it? Great job!

Too cool. Wonder where one would find a shed to park that in. I know where there is a weathered machine shed in Ireland with a collapsed roof that would look great with a beat up dozer parked inside.

Randy that is one cool looking dozer! and despite being rusted and tired looking I bet it still works very well.

I used to work on construction equipment and I remember them well and how dirt and rust would collect and how leaking hoses or over greased joints would turn the surrounding area black.

I have been thinking that my dozer would look good on a flat car, parked next to the recently built skid shacks and of course in that old Irish barn. The dozer blade just fits through the smaller door. The larger one is partially blocked by fallen debri and ivy.

Thanks guys.

Cool looking dozer, Todd! Nice job beating it up. Does it have a brand name on it anywhere? I want one (or more)!

Thanks! No brand name on it anywhere. It really is just a kids toy made from shiny plastic.

Wow that is great.

I’ve been looking (unsuccessfully) for a short crane boom to modify a crawler I have. Swap meet might be the place to look.
