A different kind of critter, Pacific Face Brick #1/Kersey

Doug Arnold recently sent me an Aristocraft Eggliner/Lil Critter motor block with the simple instructions, “Build something interesting from it.”

So, I dug through my ‘someday’ files and came across this picture… Pacific Face Brick #1. Pacific Face Brick was in Newburg Or from 1893-1907 when the works were renamed and moved to Willamina. Whether the critter also worked at the new plant, I simply don’t know.

It certainly was ‘interesting’, but I wasn’t quite sure what the OTHER side looked like. Then last night on feebay I came across this picture of a homebrewed mine/quarry loco from Cincinnati.

Yes it’s a different locomotive (one was in Oregon, the other Ohio) but close enough for government work - or the AV’s Skunkworks, anyway. – Unless someone has more pix of either, I’ll combine the neatest features of both, and fudge the rest. Both were apparently built from similar 1890’s vintage 10HP Russell traction engines. A dig through my parts bins produced most of a Kester’s Old-Time Collectibles Russell, and a junk ‘flat car’…

This will be fun!

You must have a very interesting “someday” file.

Somewhere around 750-800 'someday' pix are stored on my hard drive at the moment. Buildings, locos, cars, oil derricks, machinery, etc. Probably enough projects for 5 layouts.

And one hell of a parts collection. Go Mik!!!!

I might have to join in on this build, I have a Stomper with nothing better to do…

About 4 large flat totes worth. Unfortunately, most of the 'good' stuff has already been used. I need to find a small air pump and kerosene headlight (2017 size, I have a c-16 one but it's huge)....

Anyway, last night I mounted a Wilesco spring belt pulley to one wheel. I’ll use that instead of chains or gears to drive the crankshaft. Tis simpler… And I doubt most will really notice. Then I stuffed 12oz of sinkers in the boiler and glued it down… pix later

I went to the tire store and got about 10 pounds of used lead weights that had been used in balancing tires. all different sizes. They will (and already have) come in handy for putting extra weight over drivers. The guy said “Come back any time.”

Just watch if you try to melt those. They’re as much zinc as lead. Stay upwind, or one good whiff and you’ll be sick as a dog for days… don’t ask me how I know.

I use zip ties. Mama didn’t raise no dummies…

Mik, please do me a BIG favor, save all those pictures on to a DVD or two if needed. Hard Drives andd computer do very bad things from time to time!

I have melted tire weights before but not in an inclosed space, rememeber CarbonTetraChoride? Yes, about did myself in one time! Learned a very inportant lession that day, Garage door open and fan runing!

Mik, neat little project, please keep us all up to date.

GO MIK GO!

I’ll do you a bigger favor… if you want. Mail me a couple discs or send me $5 and I’ll burn you a set. :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t forget the two boxtops. :stuck_out_tongue:

As I said in the previous post, the originals were built from 1890’s vintage 10HP engines - something like this:

The Kester engine is a later, larger, engine with a cast smokebox, like this one:

Rather than do a lot of grinding, my model will have the cast smokebox.

I ‘borrowed’ the headlight from another unfinished project, and found a LGB coal bin. You can also see the belt drive. It has a half twist in it so that the crankshaft will turn the proper direction.

That big toolbox is a small block of wood covered with coffee stirrers. Whistle and pop valve are Ozark. Adding a crosshead and piston rod is more re-working than I’m willing to do right now… maybe eventually.

I’m needing to find a large wood barrel or square steel water tank, yet. And I’ll forgo air brakes until I find a cheapy pump.

Very cool Mik. Now you got my wheels turning. I like the second picture on first post of traction engine.

Almost finished – just some detailing and weathering yet. It was a lot of fun building something that’s SUPPOSED to look kludged together. I decided to use Lehmann car steps on the pilots because they were here.

The B’mann brakeman got a promotion, of sorts. And there is a GoW bulb in the lantern…

Almost ready for work, but I’m still working on a backstory for it.

Back on May 13 Richard Smith was "heard to say: on this forum no Eggliner would run on his layout! It’s an Eggliner motor block, does that count?

That’s going to look great on your layout!

Hey how’d I get dragged into this? hehe! I don’t even remember what I had for breakfast let alone what I said way back in May! However I believe it had to do with a “permit fee” which would be appropriate for non-compliant rolling stock.

As to the above little beauty it would be most welcome on the POC although it would need batteries. Really nice model Mik!

I hate Eggliners
